I am sorry to bring this up again, I know we already touched base on this subject once before... I have an 06 4x4 Dodge Cummins dually, we currently tow our 28ft aluminum enclosed trailer with the 67 Coronet in it and about 1500pds cargo weight including our electric golf cart. We registered our truck at a CLASS 4 which is fine for hauling but we are planning on adding a truck camper or upgrading to a living quarters trailer. I thought a class five would get it done but PA required further info regarding our outfit before allowing us to upgrade. After we gave them the info, they told us we need to register as a CLASS 8!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This is ridiculous. We are punished because our truck is capable of towing 24K? I tried to get on Penn Dot's site to confirm the classification weights but we cannot seem to find exact answers. Your input would be much appreciated.
BGR- what did you end up registering your outfit at? You still have the dually and fifth wheel, right?
Kara,we ended up registering our daully at class-8 with the max registered gross vehicle combination weight allowable for our truck base on the factory specs at 21,200.We fall under CDL state and federal regulations since our trailer gross is over 10,000 and is a triaxle and is mandatory for state inspection every 6 months.

Curious, is your rig considered commercial?
Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Wow! I thought Texas was expensive. I wonder what PA does with all of that cash.....some of the worse roads I have ever driven on and I have driven in most of the states.

I don't want to hear your bellyachin'. My '03 F-350 diesel crew cab has a 11,500 GVW and is $516 for regular plates. Around these parts it's all actual vehicle weight fees. My registration is $435 weight of the truck and $81 other stuff. Doesn't matter if it is used for work, comuting or decoration, it's considered commercial because it can haul stuff.
...and it keeps going UP every year with the retards in Sacramento needing new ways to balance their screwed up budget. It was $430 last year.

WOW! And I thought the $103.50 I just paid yesterday was bad for mine. That was with a $20 late fee also.

BG What is your combination weight? I have my dually registered for a combo of 22,900 and the trailer's GWR is 12,000. I talked to the State Police and they said no CDL required to stay within the state. (I realize you travel outside the state lines.) Bad part is laws are interpreted differently from person to person and trooper to trooper. I really should just go get my CDL and then I could drive what-ever, where-ever. When I reregistered our truck, Penndot never sent me a new weight class sticker for the windshield so the old #4 is still there.

Mine is registered at 21,200 maximum recommended by the manufacture(you need to supply this info to the state)A CDL licence is required at 26,001 gross weight,my trailer being registered at over 10,000 and being a triaxle also falls under CDL regulations. It's up to the disgression of the officer that stops you and the local judge or magistrate of the interpitation of the law.It doesn't matter if it a hobby or a business or for recreation with the only exemption being a "motor home registration"They have recently change the rules for agriculture use in Pa for all light trucks and equipment over 11,000 gross traveling on state highways.Pa. is getting like Calif.,desperately generating revenues.

Do they say "yins" allot? Perhaps they need all of those registration dollars to keep the Amish kids off of crank?
$430/year for a hobby trailer is nuts!!!
That would be "yinz"....
The $430/year is for the truck registration I believe.
Kara, get an RV like your parents. Then you can do anything. My brother has a 40 foot diesel pusher RV with air brakes that with his road runner on an open trailer weighs over 33,000 pounds, and its perfectly legal to drive with a regular license.
