I need to try to slow down some rust problems. I know you guys on the East coast won't consider this a serious problem, seeing that I can't read a paper through the rusty spot.
How do I treat the affected area after I remove the rust? I figured that I would prime it, but it will just start to rust again.
What is the best way to handle the problem until I can get the car ready for paint in the next year?

That's bad rust. push on it. I bet your finger goes straight through it.

that's at the point I'm afraid, that you're gonna have to cut it out and patch in new metal. a minimum repair would be to cut the area out to good clean metal, and prime the edges so that the rust doesn't spread.

it's amazing how fast scale rust like that will spread, but a clean edge will stay solid for a long time.

A little rust-mort should slow it down. Don't let it get on the surrounding paint though....

I pushed on it and it seems pretty solid, but you never know until you start trying to get to good metal. I will plan on replacing that section, but I need to stop the rust now and not leave a gaping hole.
What can I do to seal the primer so it won't rust through? Is there a one step method the prime and seal the spot until I can do it right?

That is going to be a hole no matter what.

Scrape the bubbled part off & soak it in Ospho.

Chip, scrape and wire brush away all the loose rust. Clean with brake clean or final prep. Brush on Miracle paint with a new/clean chip brush. Top coat with spray bomb to cover Miracle paint. It'll last many years and not rust anymore than it is now.

Get the black and use the leftover on frame and chassis stuff. Follow the directions about storing the leftover paint (don't remove the lid).

Snoopy - Eastwood Rust Encapsulator, clean best as possible, apply, let dry, prime and then topcoat with color matched spraybomb.

Take your grinder to it and carefully grind it until the rust is gone. Then mask the area and spray it with primer and then some blue paint that sort of matches. It will be noticeable but better than a rust mound. If you try to leave it and put other crap over top you will only make it worse.

Thanks for all the input, I will try to get it to bare metal, hopefully without hitting air, and then try out a few of the above ideas.

Will DP90 protect the metal from rust without a topcoat? Assuming I can remove all the rust from the rusted surface. This will just be a short term fix to stop the spread.

I am using the "all metal" to patch up the pin holes and trim holesthat are in the cab/fenders/doors

the surface rust on my roof was bad...it was rusted,sanded,primed,painted with out getting the rust out the first time before I got it

I am on the 3rd coat of ospho and it is almost rust free..this last time should do it

right down to the shiny metal and helps eat some of the stubborn primer and paint off

Two different ways to approach this. #1 wire brush,grind,ect. to remove loose rust. Then apply a rust coating such as Por 15,fill,paint. #2 sandblast cut out bad metal weld in a patch. If your going to paint the whole car later it really doesn't matter which you do now. In my experience you'll always find hidden spots when you strip it anyway. Hope it doesn't look like this when you blast it.
