I show two different part numbers: #2888798 for steel and #3462273 for the shaker. This is written down in a binder from the OLD (pre-internet) days. Is this correct? I vaguely remember someone saying the shaker emblems have longer prongs?????

I think this applies to some of the shaker emblems, like 426hemi, on some emblems I believe they are identical, except they have 3 pins rather than 2, example would be Cuda340. The shaker emblems have a 3rd pin in the middle, the outer two match the steel hood ones.

The 2 pin emblems were for steel hoods and used plastic inserts, the 3 pin emblems were for Shakers and used nuts on the backside. There was a very good dicussion on this last year maybe if you could do a search.

The tapering is for Challenger, rather than 'Cuda. However, only for the larger emblems such as 440 Sixpack and 426 Hemi. I have never seen a set of the 383 magnum shaker emblems to determine whether they are tapered, the 340 ones did not appear to be.

The 'Cuda emblems appear to be identical for steel hood & shaker hood, with the exception of the 3rd pin in the middle

I haven't seen a 383 emblem either but I had a 440 Magnum emblem and it was not tapered.

I should have specified 1970 'Cuda. I knew the Challenger had been tapered. Does anyone have the description of the NOS #'s I gave in the original post?

Sorry, I have no personal experience to back it up but I'd guess the "cuda 440-6" would not be tapered but would have three pins.

Strangely worded question.

Steel hood vs Shaker hood? Shaker hoods were made of steel.

As far as I know, the hood emblem on the front of the hood (if it had an emblem) is the same whether it was a shaker hood or other hood. There is the Fratzog emblem, the DODGE lettering, or the Plymouth emblem. Not all the hoods had emblems though. It depends on make & model.

Engine callout emblems have some differences, but again, they're not on all hoods. None on flat hoods or T/A or AAR hoods. On shaker hoods they go on the shaker bubble instead of the hood itself.

What are you working on?

Bruce:

If you would stop collecting so many Challengers, you might see what's happening on these Cuda's! Thanks for your input!

My question isn't about the hoods, it's about the emblems. I could have sworn that someone told me the Shaker hood emblems had longer prongs on them since the it was thicker? (shaker bubble)..........

The anodized aluminum hood trim on the front of a T/A hood uses longer retainers because the fiberglass hood is thicker than the steel hood.

Sorry I can't be much more helpful on the engine callouts. I have several pics, but I think they're all showing the installed emblem, so no pics of the pegs.

I've got some 340 emblems from a 'cuda here on a spare J54 hood. If info from them would help, tell me what you need.

Paul - The one pictured earlier is an original one from my 1970 `Cuda 440-6, and the part number is 3462273. Attached is a picture showing the 3462273 compared to a part number 2998761 "NOS" replacement nameplate purchased from Chrysler in the early 1980s...

Thanks Allen, that helps! Is the car in your avatar the 440-6bbl car? If so, where was it built?

Yes, that is my `Cuda 440-6 in the avatar... see attached pic.

On the design change for nameplate attachment, I have always thought it was due to reducing manufacturing costs... three nut attachment replaced by a simple push in attachment. Later in the 70s most nameplates were self adhesive, and later plastic self adhesive.

Would anyone have the length of what the 383 and 440 shaker emblems are? I have the 426 hemi and 440 sixpack emblems with three pins, and I bought the 383 two pin emblems, however they are nowhere near the length of the two prior emblems.... Just wanting pics or confirmation of what I have or need???? TIA
