I've been thinking when I have my FE5 Duster repainted I'll have the stripes painted on semi- gloss black possibly. I'll go with a base/clearcoat paint job.
I'd appreciate some opinions on having the stripes painted on instead of stripe decals.
Does it add much to the cost of the paint job?
TIA

Depends on whether your doing the paint job yourself or not. I painted a set of chevy racing stripes on my 80' malibu and they look great if not better than decals. Paint is going to last longer than decals IMO. I won't be painting the decals on my roadrunner cause that takes a lot of measurements to get the exact factory look, along with the pinstripes on the hood and what not.

I did mine on a 1970 Dart. The decals are a matte. I bought the set of bumblebee stripes from Year One (which was apparently made on 3M backed paper) and I applied them with a help of a friend...they went on very easy. 2 years later the top stripe was faded away and the sides were still semi gloss. A year after that stage the top decal on the trunk started peeling apart. I eventually had mine painted on at the next paint job, under the clear coat and it looked Fan tastic.

I prefer paint. These stripes don't really show up unless there is a lot of sunlight. Kinda like 'stealth' stripes.

If it does not have to be factory correct for a restoration, the painted on stripes (with base/clear) is the way to go. The decals fade and discolor, and start to crack after several years. The rear R/T stripe (white) on my '69 Convertible is faded, discolored, and starting to get small cracks, while the rest if the paint still looks decent.
I painted the black stripes, and hood blackout on my '71 charger, This was a base/clear paint job, and the paint and stripes still look great, but it did take quite a bit of time to lay out the stripes using the fine-line tape. Also, with the paint in stripes, The stripes were painted further into the trunk area.

Stripes painted on or decals? A matter of personal preference. Painted on last indefinitely. Decals fade, crack, etc. I chose decals because I wanted to be factory correct.

Painted stripes- Everything has to go just right with the fine-line tape and removal so you don't get bleed-through under the tape or something go wrong on removal.. Decals- Wide decals going over body contours can be a pain to get flat and get all air bubbles out.. Myself- 3 year old Pheonix-Graphics decals that still look just like they did the day I put them on, when I messed one of them up going on they sent me another one of that piece dirt cheap

If you are going with the factory style 1970 dual longitudinal stripes, they are pretty easy to layout and paint. As others have said, if your car is outside a lot, they with probably last longer plus it will give you a more custom look if they are painted on. On the other hand, if you are looking to do the upper body stripes like on a 71 or 72, they are harder to get right unless you order a stencil/mask kit. Truthfully, it boils down to personal preferences. Me, I'd prefer if you bought some stripes from me but I can see the benefit of painting them on as well. Even though I actually produce stripes myself, I sometimes paint them on based on my "vision" for the car/truck I am building. Of course the biggest con of painting on stripes is if you change your mind and want to do something different down the road.

Pro's:
- last longer - easier to clean, wax, etc. - looks very clean
Cons's: - not correct - more work/more expensive to have done - texture/gloss is incorrect - repairs are more complicated and expensive - painted stripes sometimes "get lost" in the reflection of light of the panel compared to traditional vinyl stripes and decals.

Gary, If I don't have them painted I'll buy from you. I'm just kinda looking for opinions right now. The side stripes will be the 71-72 style with 360 callouts.
Thanks!
