I have a 500 cu in Big block stroke with 440source heads that needs an intake manifold. In my garage, I have an Edelbrock Performer 383 intake manifold that I traded some parts for. I was thinking of using this on the stroker motor that is only going to be used for street use and would not be going over 6000 rpms.
Would my seat of the pants Dyno notice if I upgraded to something like a Performer RPM over the 383 Performer?

Actually, I just found an intake shootout done by Hotrod magazine. At most, its a 15hp on a little better than stock motor. I realize that the more performance oriented the motor, the more the difference in the two intakes, but I think that the difference will be that noticable on the street. here is the article:

nice article! was to be nice they included the test with stock manifold to get the lowest reference too. I have a performer to replace my stock unit ( I know they are virtually the same ) but will be nice to get thos comparision numbers... I should get some gain there, even small ( at the end just paid around $70 for the performer unit )

So you have a 500 inch lowdeck? (400 stroker) The Performer will be a huge choke on a 500! On a 383/400 its an idle to 5500rpm unit. You have a 500 and probably a long duration cam. The RPM should be the minimum to go with.

On the part1 of the intake shootout, there wasn't much difference because the stock heads were the choke point, not the intakes. Part 2 when they used a set of CNC ported aftermarket heads showed some good difference between intakes. For your build I would use either the RPM intake or a holley street dominator.

Honestly, you'll have Pooploads of torque with either intake on a 500" stroker.

I dropped my Perf-RPM for a tried-n-true Eddy TM7 and I still have gobs(or pooploads) of torque as well as mucho better top end.

Consider dropping on a TM6, easily bought for under $100.

Look into the Holley street dominator. It's a single plane. Good design and will help on the top end. Low end it's a little restrictive buy it's design. You will probably need it with the "pooploads" of torque you will deffinately have.

Running the street dom now on my 383 and its very nice. A little less bottom end than an RPM, but much cheaper. Don't get me wrong though...the RPM is a VERY nice intake.

I like the RPM and the Street Dominator. I run the Street Dominator on my 440 and my son runs the RPM on his 400 and they both work good. Ron

Thanks guys. I have the performer 383 for sale, I am going to pick up something a little better, I think the Dominator or RPM. I did a little more research, and they seem to be more of what I am looking for.

I just found a Torker 383 intake, looks like it may be ideal for my combo.

part 2 of that intake shootout is probably a better indicator of the the results you might achieve on a large engine than part 1. http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/hrdp_0801_mopar_intake_manifolds/index.html time to cut the hood for a tunnel ram!
