You could of ordered an 8 3/4 non suregrip rear end with your Hemi car in '68 too!

What the heck would someone want an open rear end with a hemi for, do you think there were any built like that?

Back in 68 my dad ordered this roadrunner at our dealership for a guy that wanted to drag race it, but with the 383 4spd in stock eliminator he ordered it with the dana on the paper work. but they wouldn't build it with the dana, he had to give him the balance back. I have the car now. I store it in the showroom during the winter.

A friend here in Reno, has the same story w/ his 69 RR. He still has the car he bought in 69 w/ original paint & everything. Factory wouldn't install the dana, so the dealer agreed to do it. Even has the dealer receipt for the dana & his window sticker. BTW, your RR is beautiful.

When the car met it's demise, it had 88,000 miles on it & never a rear diff problem. It's demise was in Aug. 1984.

What was it's demise???
a) wrecked
b) rusted
c) stolen
d) fire
e) none of the above

I looked at the pic. On the sheet under the 40 axle code there is a 4. And rt next to it under the 408 sure grip code there is an 8. ?????

404 - 3.23:1 rear axle ratio
408 - sure-grip differential

I'd throw a WAG that around 10-15% of the HEMI automatic cars are 3.23 OPEN. It was STANDARD - NO extra $$$ .

Did your friend have the hemi in Reno in 69? I am from there and was fairly active in street racing from 70-80 but don't remember ever seeing a local hemi. Kim

There was some claim that there was a TSB that instructed replacing damaged 3.91:1 8-3/4"s in 4-speed b-bodies (383 in Road Runner, Super Bee, Charger) w/4.10:1 DANA 60s. I don't know if the paperwork ever surfaced. Off to Hamtramck-Historical to look & see.

I have seen it posted , I think Doug H. has it .

To answer another question , everything with an automatic and 3.23 gears was built standard with an open rear , didn't matter what engine it was behind.
