Looking at a 68 hemi gtx. Owner claims that the 8 3/4 thats under it is original to the car. Did they do that, I thought they were all danas for the hemis. BTW this is an auto console car.

The dana was an option for automatic cars, on 4 speed cars they were standard equipment.

The DANA wasn't available with the automatic until 1969 & only w/4.10s.
1968 HEMI w/automatic - 3.23:1 open 8-3/4 was STANDARD 1968 HEMI w/4-speed - 3.54:1 sure-grip DANA 60 was a REQUIRED OPTION ($138.90)

Not from the factory but didn't repeat rear end breaks earn you a free replacement dana?

Back in 68 my dad ordered this roadrunner at our dealership for a guy that wanted to drag race it, but with the 383 4spd in stock eliminator he ordered it with the dana on the paper work. but they wouldn't build it with the dana, he had to give him the balance back. I have the car now. I store it in the showroom during the winter. Russ

The guy that ordered it was a good friend of Al Corda's(max wedge factory backed racer friend of mine) so he wanted to race like Corda, he ordered the car 4spd, radio delete etc, He ordered when he was in collage and his parents picked up the car from us and they drove it as a daily driver till he got out of school, when it had 18k on it he pulled the motor and did a full stock elim type blueprint on the motor installed a lunati stocker cam ,he raced it a little then met a woman when the car had 30k on it and sold it, I got it from the guy he sold it to, it had 54k on it and the quarter panel was banged in which saved the car cause he could'nt drive it. I know the guy who bought it new and called him, he was all excited and came over with a bunch of parts, he still had all 4 original painted wheels and dog dish hub caps with the lug nuts , original cam, and all the original paper work , original window sticker, bill of sale with my fathers signature , tax statement, warranty stuff etc, I was in 7th heaven to say the least. After I got it running and fixed the original quarter I took it over to his house and let him drive it and he was like oh well neat car see you later, I'm like glad it's mine!! I have some old pic he gave me and some time slips etc. I'm never selling this car!!! Russ

To throw a monkey wrench in the works, IIRC in '64 and 65, the 8.75 was in ALL the HEMI cars, even 4-gear cars.
Weren't those cars factory backed? The street Hemi wasn't available until '66, right?

My '71 Hemi Charger (automatic) had a 3:55 Sure Grip 8-3/4 from the factory. When the car met it's demise, it had 88,000 miles on it & never a rear diff problem. I was the second owner of the car. It's demise was in Aug. 1984.
