I had a Mopar master mechanic install a new 4.10 gear set and SG in an 8 1/4. The rear end has the proper gear oil and the SG additive. Drove the car yesterday and it sounds normal when under acceleration but when you back off the gas it makes a loud whining sound. Will this go away in time, normal, or should I have the mechanic check it out?

Probably in the set-up, but to tell you the truth I never had great success in setting up 4.10 or higher gears in 8.75's that were "quiet". Seemed to always have a noise at some rpm or another. I just set them up so the drive contact was centered and not too deep and let em eat. At least they lasted.
I agree with Jay. The deeper the gear the more prone to noise. I got a se t of 4.56's that you can hear over the headers. I am the second owner, and both of us had them professionally set up but at different shops. granted when I got them the pattern was set so curing the singing was not an option. Don't get hot and work fine for what they are used for. Think that you are noisy - listen to some of teh 18 wheelers go down the highway.

If he`s anything like the last "mopar master mechanic" at the dealership who worked on my truck I wouldn`t let him work on my wheelbarrow. Your gears are set up wrong.

Mine is an 8 1/4" differential, can the adjustment be made with car on lift?

Motive gears and spicer SG. Dr Diff said Motive was a good gear set. I will get the mechanic to check it out and see if everything is in specs. I also have a Duster with 400 HP on the dyno and an 8 1/4 with 3.91 and SG with a set of MT street radials. No problems!!!!! Will try for 450 HP on a stroker for the Dart but will likely switch to an 8 3/4, but that is down the road.

I'm having the same problems with an 8.75" 4.11 SG setup. It was recommended to me by member dvw that I do this since I've got the pig out. Haven't done it yet though, too much school... Quote:
Howling on decell only indicates a problem on the coast side pattern. Either its set up wrong now or was set up wrong previously. Gear sets are lapped at the factory. Changing the point at which they run can try to wear a new pattern. You can tell by running a pattern check. Load the ring gear by using a pry bar between the ring gear and case, then rotate in both directions. If the marking compond is removed from the outer edges of the concave side of the teeth,it will make noise on decell. If the pinion depth and backlash are correct sometimes you can make slight adjustments to help. You would be amazed how much .002-.003 backlash can make. At worst either run it or you will have to replace the gear set. Howling seldom causes a problem if its not severe. Doug

the backlash is off when you have the whining on deceleration.
What causes noise under steady cruising...don't know id it makes noise under acceleration...just notice it when I'm cruising at steady speed. Have had two different 3.55 setups and both have done same thing.

Exactly. The "master mechanic" at the Dodge dealership set the rear end in my truck up so well that he forgot to pour in some additive. Had to take my truck back in and leave it another day to find out why it was chattering through corners.
