Just built and installed bars (spring loaded) on a 71 Duster. Overal length is 64 inches. Caltracs, split mono leaf, rancho 5 way, transbrake, 3330 race weight, 10 oh to 10.20

I would like to know where to set the wheel height on the bars (at least a general idea). I have been told that i need almost 12" of height. Any truth to this?

Thanks!

According to most wheelie bar charts that I've seen at the shop(BGR) and when we set them its usually between 3" to 6" on a ladder bar and 4 link car. On a spring car or Cal-Trac setup we generally set them no more than 8"

I set my about 4" to the C/L of the wheel... but I
run a 4-link... your going to get more wind up so
I would start about 5" and play with it from there...
you need to remember that you also have the spring
thats on them... lift the bars all the way up to
see where they would be locked up

Mr P Body: Is that 4" to C/L mean 4" above C/L?

RBDuster: How long are your bars? I assume you run Caltracs? Pics?

Thanks for the info guys!

I have a 71 duster, I welded my wheelie bars on at 9" from the ground to center of wheelie bar wheel, no tension on springs. Depending on how hard the car hits the wheelie bars and how high you want it to stand up,depends on the spring tension. Tighten the springs up to keep the front end down.

Bars are 60" and spring loaded. No Caltracs just ladderbars

I tried 4 to 5 inches, and they hit so hard it unloaded the tires. I will try to get them between 8 and 10 to start this year. I watched a video of a camaro on yellowbullet and you couldn't beleive how much the rear rotates with caltracs and split mono leafs

Mine are set at 10"L/10.5"R, measured at the center, car's happy with that. Car likes to hike its LF a bit more than the RF; probably under-caged, but it's a vintage car so I'm not changing that. Modified SS springs, footbrake, 5800stall. No snubber. 13x31s, usually @ 7.5PSI cold. It'll carry the front tires out a good way, as much as 100 feet, on a good track, sits down very politely. Just knocks the shoe polish off about 15% or so of the bar's wheels. Goes straight as a string. 368" SB Duster/904/5.38 Dana, about 3000lbs, my weight about 160. 100lbs ballast. Low 10s with a 750 carb, should go 10.0 with the 1050. (If that info helps.)

4" is to the center line of the wheelie bar wheel,
in gear... in the pic in my sig they were set at
6" for show and tell... if you set them to high you
can have to much momentum going up and bottom out
the spring and unload the tire. Also my set up is
using a trans brake... go a little higher if foot braking
(that will roll the pinion up higher)... in that pic
the 60' was 1.20 or 1.21... I set the right bar
1/4" lower than the left

When I installed the bars on the old cuda we started at 6". It blew the tires off. Raised them to 8". It still spun but not that bad. In this pic they are at 11" And it alowwed the car to hook and lift the front about an inch high.

Well I will be the stick in the mud. BUt as you can see it will depend on the car. There is no magic answer. A caltrac car making 500hp with a SB will need something different thsn the saem car with a 1000hp BB. Pick a hieght and get out and run it, video is an excellent tool when tuning things like wheelie bar height.

I agree with Al, it all depends with how quickly it pitch rotates. Some if there too high the momentum will unload the tires when the bars hit. On 9 sec Phils IMO when he had them low it wasn't allowing the chassis to transfer weight and spinning but not from unloading.

Thank you for the info guys. Forgive me for asking, but could someone explain "pitch rotate".

For anyone that is interested, i am posting a link of video of the cars' launch. Any comments are welcome. My car is videoed right at the 16 second mark. Purple 71 duster in the left lane.

I'll be a bigger stick in the mud then Al, and say tune the suspension, and not the wheelie bars to make the car 60' better.
