Buddy tells me it's probably the best all around mopar race motor. Another friend runs 9.80's in a demon with one.

Steve Dulcich did well with his 2003 Engine-Masters 470 entry.

The one in my Duster has been together for many years. Requires little or no maint. to keep it going. Have a .613" flat tappet cam and about 12 to 1 compression. Car weighs about 3300 w/me in it and runs 10.50's anywhere. Will be into the 30's and 20's if I tweak it. Great combo thus far. See ya, Ken Michalik

If you consider all the factors in building a performance engine, And plan on using a std port cylinder head. The 470 is THE best combo out there for stock port opening heads. Light bob weight, big bore, good amount of stroke/cubes, ideal "all purpose" rod ratio make this a very good kit. These combos typically work better than they "should" because it is a well balanced combination FOR stock port sized cylinder heads.

i used to put together a 470 for some friends. it was in a '67 gtx, about 3200lbs, with stage 6 heads. ran a few 9.90's at 134mph. definetly one of my favorite combo's.

I paid right at $4000 for mine with bushed lifter galleys and good bottom parts. Went a best of 10.48 at 129 with Indy EZ heads in a 3300 lb car.

I've got one one the street. Even at high altitude it's all I wanted and more. 3800 lbs at altitude and pulles hard at all RPM's. Couldn't be happier.

Great feedback! How much block clearance was involved? Also, I just got off the phone with indy. 1495 for rotating assembly. Not a bad deal at all but they sure are lacking in the customer service department! I will spend the extra 400 and go with muscle motors kit. Just cause my car dont say superstock or my name isnt warren johnson they dont have time for me!

I am in 100% agreement with Mike. Although many people get all wrapped up in 'bigger is better", I still think the 470 motor is hands down one of the best for the buck, and many off the shelf parts are available now as well for it. 451" ranks right up there, and of course the 493 and 511's are probably next on my list of simple but overachievable combos.

I agree, the 451 and 470 combos are just awesome for the price. When I was running high 9's with an Eddy headed 451 and 590 purpleshaft cam I use to laugh at all the 500" Indy headed roller motors running low 10's. Now I have one of those 500" turds but it's finally starting to come around now with a 9.82. I just think the 500" 440-1 motors need alot of compression to really make them work and I don't have the cam or compression to really make it fly.

I think a 470" motor with a real good set of Victors or EZ's or whatever and a 590 purpleshaft can easily go high 9's and not break the bank, also very streetable and reliable.

Yep, the combination is really important. I've seen a number of those 440-1 headed slugs at the track also. Not that they can't be made to work but the 451 or 470 with standard port heads just seems to be a little easier for the average guy to get a handle on.

As for the original question; yes, lots of people have built 470 inch motors over the years. I was building them more than 15 years ago and I wasn't the first guy to do it. Back then we had to offset grind OEM cranks because nobody was making new forgings. These days you can just whip out the VISA card and order up a rotating assembly.

I'm happy with mine. Steath heads, flat solid cam in a 97 Dakota runs low 10s.

Is anyone making off the shelf pistons for the 470 using a 6.385 rod? I have a nice set of Crower rods but after looking at a bunch of different piston manufactures I don't see anything listed. It looks like most of the kits now use a longer rod.

After looking at an Indy advertisement they show their 470 kit using 6.385 rods, but I have not called them to see if they stock that piston.

I prefer a 470 Low deck to a 493RB for the same money. The 470 is a great bucks down combination in both blocks that's real easy on parts and runs forever when carefully assembled...3.90 stroke is the same as a 455 Buick BTW

Wiseco I think has them. That is the same combo in the Duster.I got them from Indy years ago.
