I have them airless-shot blasted. Most cleaners now-a-days are not really strong anymore due to EPA mandates and DEP fines. I watched a program once on a southern CA shop building an engine for Boyd Coddington and they used a pressure washer to clean the block. That would be a huge fine if anyone saw you doing that as a business in CT unless you were reclaiming all the residue.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

This is the route I am taking ... I bought a PW with soap injection. I will probably get a better job-done PLUS a hot-tank will eat-up the cam-bearings and the intermediate bushing.

shot abraded this block and came out great. A tip is to thoroughly soak your parts with WD40 and cover them with trash bags after and they will be amazingly clean indefinitely

You will need to lightly hone those lifter bores. I also don't believe in steel shot braiding the block with out the main caps on, becauce it does cause some stress relieving in the block. Check cam fit with bearings installed before going any further.

How do they protect the machined surfaces when shot blasting?
The times I have had it don't they don't , but the blocks I had done needed full machining anyway so it wasn't a big deal.
I did make some flat plates out of .090 alum to cover the decks on one block I had done .

I used large diameter rubber hose in the main bores with the caps torqued in place and slit pcs of heater hose in the lifter bores. With those in place there was no damage.
