so i have to get the exhaust manifolds off of my 318. they are leaking pretty bad and driving me nuts.problem is i checked them out and half of the bolt heads are already rounded off and really rusty. so i need suggestions on removing them and trying not to break them off in the head. the engine is my w100 and i have just hand tools. thanks

I would suggest warming-it-up and getting some 6 point sockets.

Try tapping a smaller metric socket on with a hammer.

sb are not to bad,got to watch the end studs

the smaller socket tapped on is one good way,I have done that most times with them comeing out

yes a torch and red hot they come out easy,I just run a couple beads withthe wire feed welder to get a BB stud red hot..it came right out

if you had to,you could torch the head off to remove the manny, then it would leave a good part of the bolt sticking out to grab with vise grips

start spraying a couple days head of time with PB-blaster and run the engine some to wick it in good, that helps with rust for sure

the 2 end studs are in water,so be ready for it to drain if they come out

I use the copper rtv on the mannys and head with no gasket on sb,never have a leak with them, let cure over night and no more leaks

buff them down with a scotch pad and grinder wheel to clean them up nice and stick them

IMO,I would undo the head pipe first then remove the manny, spray those bolts down good with blaster as well

good luck and hope none break

I've also had some luck using a punch and wacking them straight on a few times - after you soak them with PB Blaster.

If you can find a dealer get some Zep45.It makes PB Blaster look like water. We used PB at work along with Castle thrust.Thrust was good PB was almost as good as using nothing.Zep was the best stuff Ive used in 25 years as a pro.Rocky

last i got was from napa in the dorman fastner line

I got 2-5 gallon buckets of nothing but sb bolts from yrs of working on them and junking a few

most come from going to headers

I can scratch you up some "used" ones if you need some ginnys

any grade 5 or 8 bolt from the hardware should work also

Exhaust bolts are a pain!!! I'd definitely use new bolts and anti-seize at the minimum. Will make them easier to remove next time.

I can't recall for sure, but it seems like stainless steel bolts will not seize in cast iron. Or is it stainless steel studs with brass nuts? Maybe someone can clarify this point.
