I tried brake clean and carb clean. That took the loose stuff off. How do you get the rest off ?

Thanks

I just gently scraped it of with a flat blade screwdriver, then vacuumed/wiped the pieces out when I had the heads off my Diplomat.

put the piston at BDC to keep the particles contained, grease the piston perimeter to keep them from going down into the rings and a small wire wheel brush on a 1/4" drill

and heads on...

Use as pulverized walnut shell medium sparingly by snaking a tube in a spak plug hole. Check work with a borescope.

The pulverized walnutshells not cleaned by oil flush, will burn up in normal combustion.

I used to steam clean my engine...I would take a soda can and fill it half with water and the other half with mineral spirits. get it mixed well and let the engine warm up for about 5 minutes. With your right hand bring rpm's up with the throttle linkage and with your left hand pour the solution a little bit into the throat of the carb. Only a little bit, don't pour too much each time. The engine will choke a little as you progress, keep it under higher RPMs and rod check between drops. It should take 7-8 instances to pour that can out into the engine. Keep rod checking between.

If you want to see what gets thrown out of your exhaust, put cardboard behind your tail pipes. I did this to a slant six and my 440. I learned this trick from an aircraft mechanic that use to race back in the 70s.

I was told by an automotive professor that using water is more likely to break the carbon off in chunks and to use seafoam instead as it will dissolve the carbon better. Can't tell you if its true or not but theres my

Water ? ...good idea .. but a BESTer way is to use water-injection. It will clean-up EVERYTHING ..... ports, combustion chambers, valves and PISTON tops in a more gradual way.

Similar: I had heard dribble in diesel fuel at a fast idle for a bit then dump in the rest & drown it, let it sit overnite then take it out on the interstate & let er rip then change plugs & you're done.

Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner in aerosol can. Add while warm and running. It WILL clean the piston tops!

Sea foam. If the engine is running dribbl it in till you used up about 3/4ths of it then drown it and let it sit over night, fire it up an blow it out. If it won't fire put in a new set of plugs then blow it out on the freeway.

If the heads are off then put sea foam on the pistons with a paper towl let it soak for a while and scrape it off with a razor blade. Then vacume it out with a good vacume then blow the rings out with a good air compressor. All this time you need to have the valley covered good with a bunch of duct tape

I think he is trying to clean the tops of the pistons of a disassembled engine (a shortblock), not a running one. If it's the Hemi that you showed in another post, you should be able to use Scotchbrite discs or a fine wire wheel to get the rest of it. I prefer the Scotchbrite way myself.

You are correct. It is partially disasembled.

Thanks for all the suggesions. The Seafoam and Scotchbrite seem to be the ticket

I'd be more worried about what looks like a gouge in the cylinder wall rather than the carbon buildup on the piston. CHIP

edit...Just saw the other thread you had about this gouge in the cylinder wall. Did you build this engine the last time? If not, I'd take the piston out of that cylinder and have a look at the rings and the piston itself.
And the seapage you mentioned from the head gaskets could be from the rough surface on the deck left behind by the old broach style cutter that block was decked on. CHIP

engine was built 6 years ago . Has 32K miles on it. This is the first time the heads have been off.

I totally agree, that amt of carbon is nothing
