Thanks for all advice on why my drive shaft fell out. I am almost ready to put it back in.
The new u-joint is in place on the shaft but upon inspection of the pinion yoke and the straps, they will need to be replaced.
The Yoke seems to be fine.
When I get the new straps and bolts, what do I not know about putting the shaft back in place?
I can't afford anymore roll back rides for my car.
thanks
Mike

Hello Michael. I clean the bolts/holes w a shot of starting fluid to clean them (a bit overkill but I'm anal on things) & blue loctite on the bolts & nothing has come undone (yet). I would move the front yoke back & forth thru both planes of travel & check that it move free w NO binding, same w the rear ujoint in one plane of travel back & forth on the shaft. Screw the bolts in 1st to make sure they go in freely so there's no excessive friction/binding from bad thread that will erroneously make you think you have em tight enough when they're not. Snug them up fairly tight & you're good. I put a light smear of wheel bearing grease inside each cap ahead of time and some on the outside of the caps and on the yoke half moon seat and the straps for rust prevention.

thanks Robert,

You don't know if the straps are the large or small ones, do you?

Also,

Do I grease the inside of sheft that goes into the transmission, I forgot what I did before.

thanks

Mike

Best bet is to measure the straps and It shouldn't be necessary to grease the shaft.

I was thinking that the 7260 (small ujoint) has slightly smaller caps & therefore slightly smaller straps than the 7290 but I dont remember the specifics as it was too far back the last one I did & I did not want to comment without knowing for sure. I pour a little ATF into the front yoke to lube the splines & some on the outside of course as I'm a believer in nothing being dry on startup. Am I still up on your "wall of shame"

Is it an optical illusion or isn't that end cap far enough into the shaft yoke in the top picture. Looks to me to have too much on the outside of the yoke. Remember to have the circlips on all the caps and that they should be on the yoke side of the yoke and not on the clamp side. Any dealer should have clamps. You shouldn't have to order them from a specialty house and pay a premium for them.

here's another (poor quality) picture from a different angle. I will go by a dealer tomorrow and see of they have the straps and bolts.

also,

I was also told the same about the circlips. when I install it make sure the circlips are facing the yoke and not the straps. Why does this matter?

I called year one and they have two versions of these straps....large and small....anyone know which size these would be for an 8 3/4" rear

the yoke half moon is more centered/sturdy than the straps. Here's the kit I got for my 7260 (small ujoint)

Measure them. 8 3/4 used both sizes.
