Depends on the application. Are you talking about a 950HP type of carb? Those are usually 750 main bodies with the choke housing removed. They are nice carbs but the venturi is smaller than a 850 DP. That might be exactly what you need or it might not, depends on the application.
I'm going to use a 650 HP on my SB stroker. This motor is 427 inches with Hughes Stage III ported heads. Bigger isn't always better and all of that you know.
I was meaning the holley 950 hp, I know i know, thats what the guy who is doing the heads said also. i will post cam specs and head figures tommorow, just thought id ask, because i hope to get this project going soon.

If the main body is the same, couldn't a guy just get a 950 base plate and convert his from 750 to 950 specs? Metering blocks different?

I would bet a pretty darn good amount of money that stroker mentioned above with a decent sized cam will continue to ET better with each increase in carb size from 650 to 750 to 950, and perhaps even beyond in size, depending on a couple of other factors. It will easily run its worst ON THE TRACK with the 650.
Zero doubt about it.
I have ( in a single day) track tested a pro systems 750, pro systems 1000, race demon 1025 and a 1100 pro systems dominator on a eddie headed 416 without a ton of compression( 12 to 1 ish)...the fastest two carbs were the 1025 rs race demon and the dominator, and it wasnt even close. The 1025 being 8 hundreds better than patricks 1000 hp surprised me a little.
Thanks to Patrick for allowing me to use the carbs, i bought the dominator and still have it, and sold the 1025 a short while later on Moparts.

How does the 950 compare to the 850 having a larger venturi and what could you expect with these carbs on the street?

Smaller carbs have a faster reaction on the street (better throttle response) but lack on top end almost every time... RPM has a big factor on the size of the carb... I run a 1050 dom on a 405ci but turn it 8200... if I had a bigger carb I'd run that

Speaking of Holleys size, where does the 830 downleg HP fit?

I'm running a 750 annular booster mighty demon on my 408 - 11.2:1, big hydraulic (256 and a little over .600 lift). Runs good, but I'm wondering if a bigger carb would help? Heavy automatic car.
