depends on the valve body. If using a stock valve body, start in manual low (first) because this will apply the rear (low/reverse) band, then shift to second. Any other gear selection with a stock valve body will have the transmission start in low/breakaway (first gear with out rear band apply.)
With a true manual valve body, use second gear.
This is a good point. It depends on the valve body... manual or automatic and LBA or not.
- With an auto TF 727 or 904 valve body, always start burn out in 1st.
- With a manual valve body without LBA, never start burn out in 1st.
- If you have a manual valve body with LBA, you could start in 1st, but I would still start in 2nd.
- One caution with a fully automatic valve body (TF 727 or 904). If you shift out of 1st, the trans will automatically downshift to 1st without applying the low band when the wheel speed drops after the tires stop spinnning. So don't have it under power at that time.

I set my line lock and put the shifter in 3rd gear for the entire burnout, no shifting needed. I just get the tires up to speed, release the line lock, and power out of the water box. 727 with Griner billet trans brake.
Same here except with Tranzact Brake

I use a Turbo Action brake I bought in 93. Start in second, wide open, shift to 3rd for a 3 count then roll out, shift to low and roll into beam.
