I have a 99 Grand Caravan that I bought with a bad engine.I purchased another van for it's 3.3l engine to go in my van.The replacement engine sat outside in the weather with no hood on it Probably for a year.there was just plastic sheeting covering the engine bay.
I got the engine installed and when I went to drain the oil what a shock when I got about a gallon or so of water come pouring out of the oil pan.
I poured a couple of quarts of oil in the engine to help flush the rest of the water out.
I then changed the oil filter,added fresh oil.I also poured a few ounces of Kroil oil in to help displace the water.
I then fired the engine up and it runs great.Just had it run for a few minutes before I left for work.
I pulled the dip stick and it still is a little cloudy.I know there is stil moisture in the block.I have considered either
1. go home after work start it up again let it warm up then drain the oil out and replace with fresh.
or
2. Drain it out and reffill it with fresh oil.

The van will have been sitting for about 10hrs by the time i get home tonight.I think I should restart it with what oil is in it now.Let it warm up then drain it to help remove all the moisture that in the crankcase.
Looking for opinions on anyones previous experiance with a situation like this.

I'd say just drain it and change it again, running it more on an oil water mix cant be good for it.

alittle water will evap when run some and heated

done it a few times when I went to deep in the 4x4

I will say results will vary though...about the 5th time I did it the bearing where done..but not from water...from sand in the muddy water

I have pulled a plug and drained almost 4 gallons of water out of one that sat uncoverd..puled the pan and to my dismay it was not that bad inside for milky slug and rust..rather clean

its been running every day for 3 months now with no problems..

I would run it till it get up to temp and just change the filter and oil again,then maybe after I drive it a couple miles do it again just to make sure..

water will wash out the bearings...change the oil and filters alot for now

Hi buddy , sounds like a little project you have going there.
I wouldn't take the chance of running it again without changing the oil first, engines are too expensive. It will give you a piece of mind knowing there is fresh oil in it, even if you buy cheap stuff at this point. Run it up to temperature like you are saying, drain it, and put fresh in again. Should be good to go.

Yeah I got a 99 van that is real clean for $400 off craigslist.The guys wife drove it threw deep water and sucked it up into the engine and bent some valves.
I got this other van with a good engine but had no tranny.well it comes with one ,but that another story
It was my fault for not checking the oil sooner,but I got it all bolted in now.what a shock to goto drain out the old oil and water comes shooting out.
I am going to pull the stick and see if the oil looks to have any water still in it.If it looks ok I will fire it up and let warm up some then drain it.
I have plenty of filters on the shelf so that won't be a problem.Just sucks to have dumped brand new oil in thier and know that it's wasted.

Drain the oil and pour a gallon of kerosene thru with the plug out.Then install new filter and oil and fire it up.You will be amazed at what kerosene will take out.After you start it run it for like 5 minutes ad recheck it.Rocky

I personally would worry more about the damage the water has done by sitting in there for so long than a little water in the oiling system.

We have to deal with a similar situation at my dealership on an almost daily basis. When replacing timing chains on the cadillac 3.6l you have to remove the front cover, which has coolant passages going through it for the water pump. When you first crack the seal and move the cover back, you hear about a gallon of coolant rush into the oil pan. No way around it. I just let the coolant drain as long as I can, then just refill with oil when the job is done.

Unless an engine has been ran with a large amount of water in it, your not going to have bearing problems. Waters not going to wash out your bearings unless its pumped through the oil pump. So Id change the oil, run the snot out of it, and maybe change it again to get the moisture out and call it good.

change the oil in some other cars and dump used oil in it to flush it,done that manny times at the mud hole

I have donre the same on the 727 4x4 tranny,drop the pan drain water,scrap mud off the filter put pan on drain TC

pass the hat for donations,seems when every one is stuck and in need of a snatch they will cough up some $$ to get fluid for the one truck on the hill with water keeping it from pulling

Well SInce it had not been ran even though some water was in it I think it will be fine.
Here is a little update anyways.
Got out to the shop last night at about 1am and pulled the stick to see what the fluid looked like.It was a cloudy,but looked good.Had a strong odor of the Kroil oil I had also put in the crankcase.I think using it helped greatly in getting the water out,and to help with any corrosion issues inside..It is awesome stuff just freaking exspensive.
I went ahead and ran the engine for a few minutes to let the block get some heat in it.I then promptly drained the pan and pulled the filter off.
Ran another half a quart of oil drain through the block to get what little bit was in the bottom of the pan.
Installed a new filter,and oil then refired the engine.Pulled the stick and it was clean as could be.Checked it again this morning before taking her out on her maiden voyage,and there was no idication of any water or contamination.
So I think I am good to go.
