I'm not sure how alarmed to be by this. Bought a truck and the engine in it had been sitting for a while with a tarp on it. Low and behold, the tarp deteriorated and the original owner failed to plug up any access holes. Here is what I'm dealing with: Obviously, a couple of shreds of the tarp have found their way down the distributor hole. I imagine, short of using a long vacuum or something to get most of it out, the only way to make sure I've got 100 percent of it is to take out the engine and tear down the block. Do I have any other options? Is this something to be concerned with? I wouldn't mind a solution like changing the oil every 1000 miles for a while as the engine works all the stuff out. Is that even feasible? It's not a hopped up race engine or anything, but I also don't want to be cruising in the desert and lose oil pressure out of nowhere....

What about mice and other things that have a tendency get into car parts?
Too many cars, too many parts, too little coin, too little space to work in, too little time left to make it all happen!
Update: down to one ride, still too many parts, a little more jingle in the pocket, gaining space, and it's going to happen this year!

Water has nasty habit of finding the slightest hole and ruining things. Better tear it down. Does it turn over?
I just tried turning it over. Clockwise it feels like it's caught on something, won't budge. Spins counterclockwise fine though.

Would I be able to get away with just taking the intake off? Or should it be completely taken down?
I would pull the intake and the oilpan. I once bought a "fresh" motor that was "just" rebuilt and left outside for "3 days".
The oilpan came off with a rubber mallet. The oil pickup was rusted to the bottom of the oilpan.
The only open hole on the motor was at the oil sending port. Water ran down that hole, through the oil passages (lifters, etc.) and sat there long enough to rust up and dry. The rest of the motor was spotless.

Save yourself a lot of grief and tear it down.
I've already pretty much resigned myself to that. Just not what I wanted to do... DRATS!

I think the tarp is the least of your worries ... that first lifter looks rusty !!!
There does seem to be some flash rust in a few spots.
Bottom end stuff (mains, rods, etc..) seem to stand up to that sort of stuff, but I wouldn't expect a cam too.

That could be coking on the lifter. The picture is not quite in focus.

Sorry about that. Tomorrow the engine should be coming out and I'll hopefully get down to the nitty gritty of it.

When you pull the valley and oil pan, do us a favor and post some pics.
