I will be doing a new hemi swap into a b-body, I am trying to compare the 5.7 to 6.1 to see what would be best for me. I like the 6.1 because it has more hp, but it is quite a bit more expensive for not much more hp, would it be better to build the 5.7 up a little or go for the 6.1

I read in an article where simple mods can bring you up to the 400 hp mark fairly easily in the 5.7 (headers, cam, different chip) personally, I think anyone can be relativly happy with the 5.7 as they are pretty quick and way cheaper than the 6.1 not to mention easier to find. it just my though.

Go with the 5.7-Easier to find--Take care of the heads--Problems with higher lift (aftermarket cams) lift,,Put the 6.1 valves in and will flow as much as the 6.1!!!!I used xv's kit putting out 428hp now,I also went the uncommon route and used the car timing cover set-up to hide the alternator--Steve

The 6.1 has forged pistons and rods. To handle the higher power of a high boost supercharger or a max effort NA build, they would need to be added to the 5.7 to keep it alive. As posted, it depends on what your goals are.
Wrong Wrong Wrong....The only forged piece in the 6.1 is the crank. Rods are powdered metal, pistons are cast.

Either way they make a ton of power. Added plus for the 6.1L is the forged crank and the piston oil sprayer system which really helps the durability.
Leave the gun.......take the Cannoli's....Mike

What engine management are you using? I'm torn between making the stock computer work, or buying the stand alone. Quote:
working on 6.1 in 71 runner, having a few idle issues, but seems good so far! A little exhaust port work, good 5 angle valve job, and mid size comp cam.

Just took my 06 5.7 Magnum R/T AWD car to the track. Ran 14.56. I think with a good program it will run high 13's. Not bad for a 4200lb car. I'd think either would work for you depneding. I'd guess the 5.7 would be cheaper???
Want an EASY "mod"? Toss a jump over the fan relay and get the fans on all the time. Hard to believe, but it works better than I thought, that's for sure...
really? why because it keeps the block nice and cool? I also notice that it seems the air doesn't get to the box so nice. Wonder how much some fresh air would help??

Thanks Jerry. So you needed the custom flash because the 04 Ram was running a 5.7, and the 6.1 obviously needed a different program......but it WASN'T a flash to disable any of the unnecessary items that your car wouldn't use vs. the truck? (ie like air bags, auto trans inputs/outputs, ABS....etc) Is that an appropriate comment?
And how did you (or the hotwire auto harness) get around the built in security in that engine controller?
Edit (addition): Where does one purchase an 04 ram manual trans engine controller?
Thanks Darren
