I'm in the market for a new set of headers to replace the Hooker Comps currently on my wife's car.

('70 E-body with 440/727...manual steering and brakes, No AC. Factory iron heads, but possibly a pair of Indy SRs or Edelbrocks down the road. Car currently runs deep into the 11's in 100% street trim.)

The car has a 3" TTI X-pipe system on it, so I considered TTI headers. That being said, I have heard both good and bad about their headers. As an alternative, I considered Dougs headers since they have been around forever and they have a real good reputation.

I'd most likely be considering 2" primary headers. They would be coated as well.

Any feedback on either vendor as far as fit/finish/etc...? As of right now, I'm leaning towards Dougs headers.

Thanks in advance.

Well Scott, with all the money you have you can get them gold plated.

I'm looking to upgrade to the 2" primaries from the 1 3/4" TTIs. I found a local place that does high temp coatings, so I'm going to order bare headers and get a colored finish. I don't think the factory applied coating held up well on my TTIs. If price isn't a concern go with the TTIs and order their collector kit. Everything should bolt right up. According to TTIs site, the collector adapter kit is supposed to be included with the headers. Some vendors will try to charge you extra for it, so beware. I'm going to try to squeeze a deal out of TTI when I go to the Fall Fling.

Doug's can be had for $640 coated/$500 uncoated through Jegs. You'll likely need to have a shop fab the collector tie-ins though.

I have Doug's 2" head pipes and 3.5" collector in my 66 Coronet with 440/727. No rust yet after 2 years. I used stage 8 locking header bolts, so no leaks. Doug's are built like a tank. Here's some pics -

Too many footnotes for the TTi's - Doug's only have one. Either they've done their homework or they haven't !!! My vote goes to Doug's. I'd be checking into the fit with the SR's though - don't they have a relocated exhaust in order to fit a-bodies ??

Lefty,

Nice pics, and they DO look well-built. Are the tubes pinched for the spark plugs?

I have TTI's for my 65 Dodge, but if I had to do it over again it would be Doug's in a heartbeat.

Some of them are. I've changed plugs twice since the install. Not too hard. The two things I've run into with them are -

I had to clearance the power steering box about 1/8" Basically I ground off some cast letters/numbers.

I had to buy plug boot insulators to keep from smoking spark plug boots on a couple of plugs. After I put them in someone came out with ceramic boot plug wires which I would try if I had to do it over again.

I have manual steering and angle plug Eddy's, so the Doug's are starting to look better all the time...

Thanks

I just installed a set of Doug's D452s on my 70 Charger with a 440(493) and Eddy heads. No problem with plug clearnace with the angled plugs. The headers fit very well and I only had to clearnace the one pipe slightly on the driver's side at the torsion bar. Probably because I have the larger than stock bars installed. I think these are the best fitting header I have ever installed. Here's a shot of the driver's side top. Sorry, don't have any others presently that show them off any better.

I love my D452 Doug's headers
They fit almost perfect(had to remove the pitman arm grease fitting and ding the tube near it about 1/4".I used the AR Engineering motorplate and have an 11" 143 tooth wheel with a Dakota factory ND starter and my factory Z-bar fits good.I had to trim 1/2" off the lip of my safety steel blow-shield on the left side for the #7 tube. These are the best 4-speed headers I have ever seen.I am using Indy EZ heads with Firecore 50 wires and they don't touch the headers anywhere(thanks Rick)

Dave-

I like the idea of getting them coated a different color. My brother found a local shop in St. Louis that does hi-temp coatings as well. I'll have to look into that.

Has anybody used Dougs headers and TTI exhaust? It would be nice if TTI's adapters would work with Dougs headers without going to the exhaust shop.

Dougs D451 ceramic coated after two years. Car has never been the rain or stored outside. No extended warranty on factory ceramic coating. 1 year, that's it. They fit well and appear to be built well. Next time I will get them bare and have someone else apply the coating.

northcoastmopar-

That is what I was afraid of. I'm thinking about getting the new headers coated black for my wife's car. Her car is stored in the garage and rarely driven in the rain, but the drastic temperature changes we have in St. Louis can make the garage sweat pretty bad. I've seen the engine literally wet from sweat at one point.

I wonder if the locally owned shop can apply a better coating than TTI or Dougs though?

I am curious about how much Doug headers cost as compared to TTI's ?? When I ever build my next eng I plan to upgrade to at least 1-7/8 headers from my 1-3/4 on my car now. So are Doug's much cheapier then TTI's ??? Ron

Dougs are about $200 less that TTi's.

The problem with getting them coated on your own is that the coaters will almost always want to acid dip them to ensure all the rust is gone and then the coating process costs more just because its a one-off job. You'll end up spending about $200 more than a set of factory coated pipes. All that just so you can choose between black or silver ?!?!?
