Is it okay to use an fittings and steel braided line for the trans to cooler lines?

That's all I've ever used. I also only use teflon rather than rubber (as the hose within the steel braiding) to prevent deterioration over the years that could cause break down and end up with with trash in the lines.

yes an #6
the fittings on the cooler and trans are -4, is that going to be okay?
you should be fine #4 = 5/16 which is the stock size.
#6 is 3/8 which is a nice upgrade but the stock fittings in the trans are very small already 1/8 npt and imo need to be enlarged to get the added benefit of the bigger line.

I use #6 line but I use a AN#6 to 1/8 fitting but I drill the fitting out a little for better flow(dont go crazy drilling it out... gets weak)

5/16" is actually -5AN. I have used -6 to -5 adapters and hardware to connect -6 flex lines to OEM type 5/16 steel tubing. IMO, -4 is too small. I prefer -6 teflon.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.
