Indy single line pickup, 7 quart milodon pan, 8 quarts total with filter. I am running .003 on mains, .0025 on rods. I have a .050 jet in each head feeding harland sharp rockers. 440-1s. Brad Penn 15-40, wix racing filter. I changed the guage to a manual, have 35 lbs at idle steady hot, throttle open I can see it go to 80 then drops to 60 like the pump bypass opens. Is this ok or can I shim the spring in the pump. Melling pump, Indy cover. Galen

Its not what I call normal.... usually it'll go to
the open point of the by-pass and hang right there.

does it drop back to 60 lbs with no load on the motor at 3500 and higher rpm, or only when under a load?

What peak RPM are you going to shift the motor at? The 10 lbs per 1000 RPM works really well on most BB Mopars I have seen a 10 HP gain by reducing the oil pressure from 80 lbs at 6500 RPM to 65 lbs at 6500 RPM with 30Wt oil at 170 F I don't run straight 30 WT oil anymore as a results of that dyno session

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

is this a recent build?
you can try replacing the spring and relief valve, but your symptoms are normally associated with vey loose bearing clearances bleeding off a high volume of oil.
you might also test the rocker oiling by stepping down to .035 restrictors. use a drill to prime it and see if you have excessive leakage up there.

Cab, i've done dyno testing regarding oil pressure and high/ low volume pumps. the largest differential i ever saw was about 1 horsepower, and that was going all the way down to 45 psi. we documented the tests very carefully matching oil and water temps on each successive pull. give it some thought, a 1/2 HP drill will spin the pump to max pressure and over relief. a 3/4 HP drill will spin it slightly faster, but no difference in pressure or volume is achieved.

Thanks for the input. Its a new build, Going to shift at 6200-6400. Using Clevite full groove MS-1277HG mains 527HND rod bearings.Coated cam bearings, they were on the tight side.I am using comp lifters drilled for pushrod and pin oiling with solid pushrods, could I be loosing to much through the lifters. Should I pull the pan and take a look around.

i wouldn't pull the pan until i tested it, as i outlined above. the pushrods should seal off the lifters, especially if they have a 5/16 ball end.

I have the valley cover with removable plate. I could remove it turn pump with a drill and see whats going on topside. Engine sounds and responds good. Car is not quite ready to drive yet so I have been running some heat cycles through it. I would just hate to hurt it,

Thanks Dan, I did not read your last post first. I will set up a pair of .035 jets and see what that does first. It will be monday morning before I can get back to the shop. I have already missed this season so I have a little time. Galen
