Your first decision needs to be which heads.. And I strongly suggest something with closed chambers... Whether that's a set of 915's or one of the aluminum offerings.. It's up to you.. Eddies/Stealths/MP 452's (the new aluminum ones that are made by edelbrock for MP not the iron 452's you have) are gonna make the number alot easier.. But mostly closed chambers so quench & a reasonable compression ratio are easily attainable...
Yeah I have actually looked at the stealths. It may be an option the price is certainly right. I figured in the stock ones to get it up and running. The stealth are 900 bucks assembled. Did I mention this is going in a A body.

I know its just like anything else how fast can you afford to go. I know this can be done with out big name parts and unnessary power adders. Im thinking 2500 bucks should have the majority of the hard parts done in the motor. Cam,pistons, The stealth heads. Not counting machine work.
Of course it can..Probably for less than 3k total, depending on what you can do yourself. pm me

Ive been chasing my tail on this so I thought Id get yalls input. Im looking for 500+ streetable HP from a 440. Im looking for mid to low 11s with this.
Id like to use my tunnel ram and holley 600 carbs. Id also like to stay with a Hyd cam non roller
Everything else is changeable. I know this can be done with eddy heads a big roller ect ect. But Im looking to use what I have.
I have a stock late 70s 440 block and crank. I was going to keep the bottom end stock but bump compression to around 10-10.5 with a set of forged pistions. I also have a set of 452 heads.
Tranny will be 727 prepped with about a 3000-3500 stall. A Dana 60 with 4.10 gears tires about 28-30in.
Are you looking for a Pump gas engine or...
This is what i built from a lowdeck, in the end, it was over 500hp i'm sure, but at 1st., it was really mild & ran 10.9s in a 3100lb. duster, i had around 3500.00 carb too pan, give or take alittle on the initial buld.
400 .030", 440 crank/rods. (counter weights cut) Stock rods with ARP wave lock bolts Ross FTs, 9.73, Z gap rings 906s with just a good VJ, untouched ports, stainless 208/1.74 valves. Ductile iron rockers Comp. XE284H, M1 single, 750 holley 1.7/8 FWs 4.11s, 28" slick, 4400 PTC 9.5" Best: 10.91 @ 120.56 on a 1.51 in the best air.
Before i got the 4400 stall, i had a PTC 11" 3000, it pulled of an 11.12 on a 1.58 @ 120
Changes... Added a Wieand TR & 2 600vs Comp custom solid 529/543 (before lash), 250/256 @50 on a 108. Home ported the 906s, flowed 264/198 with the same valves. added Caltracs With alittle basic tuneing on the carbs, & suspention going south, the 1st. & only pass in the summer heat.
Ran a 10.87 @ 123.58 on a 1.62 60ft.
This car had 10.6s ritten all over it, just didn't 60ft. towards the end, raced it for 2 yrs. with over 250 passes on it, in all reality, it was a mild engine, but built right, they will run the #s.

What A body? I raced around with a 67 Cuda fastback with a tunnal ram. How about a picture of the ram. It might be to big for the street. The 440 will work, but by the time you buy forged pistons, have the rods resized and new rod bolts, then turn the crank and have it polished, for a few hundred bucks more you could do a 511 source stroker.
Why a hyd. cam and not a solid? Solid cam will run just as easy as hyd cam on the street, but will be of better use with that tunnel ram.
Heads? Sell the iron 452's and get the Stealth's. Doing up iron heads will cost almost as much as a new set of stealth's. Dollar for dollar, the Stealth's will out flow factory iron everytime.
I bet I already spent to much of your money. If you do it right the first time, it won't cost you twice the second time.
Snap your neck, mega G-force launch, is all I want!

Lots of questions I hope I can answer them all.
1972 Plymouth Scamp. As far as the hydraulic cam. I was always told that solids are ment for the strip. That the hyd is a more streetable cam. Your exactly right on the heads. I looked at having the 452s worked. The guy wanted $899+ parts to do them. Well the stealths are $899 assembled. There also lighter. Here is a pic of the ram. Im running 2x600 VS holleys.

I ran a .590-.613 solid lift cam on the street for four years with no problem. That ram will run better with a solid in the upper rpm range.
That ram looks to be 40 years old. used back in the 70,s on a 440 4 speed car with a big solid lift cam and max ported 906 heads, maybe? Other than the Hemi, it was the next best thing for the mopar guy.
Good luck with your build, How abouts some pictures of the car!!

Well Ill tell you what. You seem pretty knowledgeable about these. Could you suggest a cam that would work well with this. Yes the ram is old. But I like the nostalgia(spelling) look it gives off.

The hyd flat tappet cam works great and offers the simplicity, reliability and low cost of stamped steel rocker arms. The solid will make more power but will require the added cost of adj rocker arms with additional high quality adjusters, the correct push rods and the occasional lash adustments. I suggest for a super hot street driver to stick with the hyd flat tappet cam with good stamped arms.
Keep old mopars alive.
