I have a Superwinch4500, I never remember to charge the trailer battery, it's an open trailer, battery is not mounted to trailer. I usually end up plugging my battery charger into my generator and running the winch off the battery charger. Tonite I noticed my generator has red and black studs marker "12 volt 10 amp". Can I just run my 2 winch wires right to that and run it straight off the generator? Is 10 amps enough?

My first winch was powered by the vans battery. I just ran heavy gauge wire back to a quick disconnect.

Something like THIS
If you dont want to mess with a second battery, Wild Bills way, is well the Way to go.
For the price Id recommend it, it sure beats messing with a second Batt on a open trailor. mike

I like that Wild Bill! Reminds me of years ago when I used 2 sets of jumper cables hooked together to run my winch off the truck battery. This would eliminate the trailer battery. Bill, did you run these wires through the vehicle and leave them on all year round? Or do you just clamp them to your truck/van battery when you use the winch? Solar panel would be cool too.

I have a similar setup on both trucks....Just used good wire & ran it from the battery of the truck back to the rear bumper & terminated it with a lift truck type electrical connector.. about $8.00 a piece. Have a lead from the winch with the same deal so it can be disconnected & then to keep the road grime out of the connector when the truck is being driven just sealed another connector with silicone & some dielectric grease. Dont forget the breaker between the battery & the long run to the back of the truck. One thing I do have is the winch mounted on a reciever type hitch so it can connect to the trucks or the trailer... Really came in handy this winter when I got hung up in the snow. Grabbed onto a big tree with the winch & poof... Self recovery.
Come check it out at Norwalk... I owe you a from last year when I ran out.

Another idea, with an open trailer, would be to simply drive the car on and off the trailer, thus no need for a winch I do it all the time, works great

I made a long set of "jumper" cables. Got some bulk battery cable and heavy duty clamps from the local truck parts place, then put welder quick disconnects on the other end & on the winch. Kind of a pita, but it allows me to use the trailer/winch with different trucks. The trailer winch is a Ramsey re8000.

I drive the car in and exit thru the roll down driver's window[ Jack be nimble?] Carry a jump pak and use a $69 12v winch when tragedy hits. Slower, but pulls this 3200lb OK.
