I have a Superwinch4500, I never remember to charge the trailer battery, it's an open trailer, battery is not mounted to trailer.
I usually end up plugging my battery charger into my generator and running the winch off the battery charger.
Tonite I noticed my generator has red and black studs marker "12 volt 10 amp".
Can I just run my 2 winch wires right to that and run it straight off the generator? Is 10 amps enough?

I think those are charging wires, 10 amps wont cut it I dont think. get a good deep cycle marine battery.

I don't think that will work. I have never tried it but I did try using my charger on a bilge pump , it kept kicking off. Seems it would take less power to run it than a winch.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

The problem is I only race a few times a year, so charging it through the truck won't help as it will be dead from sitting in the driveway.

I have a marine battery, just trying to eliminate dealing with it. I always have my generator and battery charger at the track. Does it hurt to run the winch off the battery charger? Does it just give it 12 volts?

The proper thing to do would be to mount my marine battery in a box on the trailer and keep it charged, but I never seem to get that accomplished. LOL

I will eventually be using a solar panel.

My cheapo Harbor freight 3000# winch requires 140 Amps under full load. So no 10 amps wont do it,like Tony[Quicktree} stated those are just charging wires.

10 amps will spin it though and pull some weight. mike

My first winch was powered by the vans battery. I just ran heavy gauge wire back to a quick disconnect.

If you dont want to mess with a second battery, Wild Bills way, is well the Way to go.

For the price Id recommend it, it sure beats messing with a second Batt on a open trailor. mike

I like that Wild Bill! Reminds me of years ago when I used 2 sets of jumper cables hooked together to run my winch off the truck battery.
This would eliminate the trailer battery.

Bill, did you run these wires through the vehicle and leave them on all year round? Or do you just clamp them to your truck/van battery when you use the winch?

Solar panel would be cool too.

I just put an "el cheapo" harbor freight winch in my trailer. I am using my "jump box" to run it. It did fine and no need for an extra battery.

Seems that a battery would be cheeper and allot easier, I know about the charging deal but how much is all that extra cable and hook up and what if you use another tow rig to haul with for some reason?

I have a similar setup on both trucks....Just used good wire & ran it from the battery of the truck back to the rear bumper & terminated it with a lift truck type electrical connector.. about $8.00 a piece. Have a lead from the winch with the same deal so it can be disconnected & then to keep the road grime out of the connector when the truck is being driven just sealed another connector with silicone & some dielectric grease. Dont forget the breaker between the battery & the long run to the back of the truck.
One thing I do have is the winch mounted on a reciever type hitch so it can connect to the trucks or the trailer... Really came in handy this winter when I got hung up in the snow. Grabbed onto a big tree with the winch & poof... Self recovery.

Come check it out at Norwalk... I owe you a from last year when I ran out.

Set up I use too. Other than the winch, I don't mount anything perminently. Run a pair of 10 gauge wires from the tow vehicle battery ( quick disconnect and a 40amp breaker ) back to the trailer tongue ( pendant control ) and then to wing nutted studs on the winch. I just drap the wires over the top of the tow vehicle when it's hooked up. When I'm done using the winch, I just unplug it from the battery and winch studs, roll it up and put it in a box marked winch controls. If you don't use your winch very often ( I drive on and off my trailer if I'm not broke ), it's the way to go.

Another idea, with an open trailer, would be to simply drive the car on and off the trailer, thus no need for a winch
I do it all the time, works great

I made a long set of "jumper" cables. Got some bulk battery cable and heavy duty clamps from the local truck parts place, then put welder quick disconnects on the other end & on the winch.
Kind of a pita, but it allows me to use the trailer/winch with different trucks. The trailer winch is a Ramsey re8000.

I drive the car in and exit thru the roll down driver's window[ Jack be nimble?] Carry a jump pak and use a $69 12v winch when tragedy hits. Slower, but pulls this 3200lb OK.

We just ran some #4 AGW wire from one of the trucks batts to the rear bumper, 2 quik disconnect welding connectors and have 12 vdc @ 160 amps with the truck running, good for winches , jumper cables , major spot lite or what ever DC stuff you want to fool with, been there for 10 years comes in real handy , got a blue sea systems 250 amp breaker near the batt
