My brother and I went to Cecil to run the N/SS class yesterday as it was the rain date for Saturday. They also ran the AMI class and some FAST (Supercars) class and the regular bracket car along woth the Jr dragsters. So it was very packed and they said we only get one time run. And only 4 cars showed up for the N/SS class. But on my only time run I messed up and launched in second gear so I just aborted the run. When they called our 4 class cars for eliminations my brothers 64 Fury would not back up and lost reverse. So I go up and dail and 11.55 as thats what I ran there in early June. After my burnout they tell me to back out and shut it off. Seems my thermostat housing gaket decided to start leaking and I was dripping anti-freeze. So I never did get a clean run on my car yesterday as I went and fixed the leak but it was getting late and I was tired so we headed home. At least nothing major broke. I plan to go to a T & T in a month or so as it got very hot yesterday and I want to wait for it to cool down some. Ron

That sucks Ron, but at least nothing serious broke. I hate it when you do all it takes to get to the track and that damn Murphey and his laws show up This kinda brings up another question I've been thinking about. Should we be running anti-freeze at the track? I too have a street car like yours that I drive a lot and run anti-freeze in as it lubes the water pump, raises the boiling point and resists corrosion. It also greases down a dragstrip when a failure happens. Just wondering what are peoples opinions on this? Sorry for the highjack Ron

Practically no one, especially the OP, is deliberately trying to create an unsafe condition. But having said that, I am of the opinion that antifreeze has no business being near the racetrack. Especially on older cars that don't seal as well as new ones do. If you have a car that you run on the street and take to the track occasionally, just put petcocks in place of the block drain plugs. This way you can easily drain the block and radiator and get the antfreeze out. When you get the car back home, just put the stuff you drained out right back in. It's really not that hard and might save someone(or yourself) a lot of grief. Same holds true for the power steering. Best to at least leave the belt off so that if you have a failure of a hose or the pump, you won't spray the ps fluid all over the place and cause a major catastrophe. Think and be considerate.... MB

Here is what they call for up here.... if you drive your car TO the track. Anti freeze is acceptable.
If it comes in on a trailer and found to have anti freeze in it. Your out.
That is a ridiculous rule..
I have seen pristine 15 second cars that are perfect in every respect trailered to the track, and I have also seen pretty fast, cobbed up, shitttboxes drive to the track.
Get the point??

Antifreeze should be a big no-no at the track. If you are really worried about your water pump seals, there are water pump lubes and other additives that can be used that don't snot the track up if you have a leak. It gets real old to have to wait 45 min for a track cleanup after a hose blows on a car because some dorf thinks that straight A/F cools better. If you have cooling issues, fix them on your own time, not everybody elses track time. At least straight water evaps almost instantly and isn't as likely to put you into the wall. Hoses break, head gaskets fail, and freeze plugs pop out - don't make it worse and snot the track up with A/F. I think it should be checked at tech - no A/F or no race...
Well said Too many leakers out there, NO A/F
Oil is way easier to cleanup than anti freeze!!!!!!!

is antifreeze that much worse than oil or trans fluid or gear lube? our cars are filled with the slickest substances known to man. how about synthetics? i run antifreeze in my car. i drive it to the track, and i'm NOT going to run water only. i check and maintain my cooling system to the best of my human abilities, and say my prayers. if i get banned, oh well, it is a street car.
for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

That's a poor analogy...
On several accounts. For one, the motor/trans won't run without oil so you have to run oil. Also, aside from a pressurized source, the engine likely won't pour oil. Your cooling system will just as easily run with water as it would antifreeze. Also many more opportunities for a failure. Heater hoses, core plugs, rad hoses, the radiator, etc.
Also, the rear usually won't pour gear oil all over the track unless it explpoded. Even a bad pinion seal won't drip much oil, as it would if you popped a rad hose and dumped 3 gallons of coolant on the track.

There is no way anti-freeze is harder to clean up the oil or trans fluid. Its a hell of alot easier to clean anti-freeze in my shop the oil is. And your making a big deal out of something that is not the reason for this thread. I was simply stating that I had a bad luck day and never even thought there would be so much crying because I have some anti-freeze in my street car. I have no problem with the tech guy backing me out and not letting me make that pass. He did his job and may have saved me from big trouble. I was just stating that my luck was not so good that day. I feel that oil and trans fluid and P/S fluid can be as much or more dangerous to worry about leaking then anti-freeze IMO. So I had a bad day as I had a small leak at the line. Dont matter what fluid it was its just the fact that I had a leak. The guy also had an attitude to me as he came to me and said .........yesterday you leak trans fluid and today coolant. Then I told him I did not leak any trans fluid yesterday because I WAS NOT HERE YESTERDAY ! Then he says am I sure. Ah yea I do think I know where I was yesterday. Then he says ......oh it must have been another red car. Ron
