I realize the early 70-73 360 list a different main bearing than those 74 up. The thrust bearing diameter is larger on the later bearing. In the past I haven't questioned this only installed the bearing that matched the year being built. Today I have a 360 for a friend on the stand and no place to get the early style bearing. I installed the later main bearing set that I had on the shelf and can find no problems with this. Any engine builders have any input? Thanks to any who have done this or maybe found a problem that I'm overlooking?

I thought the width of the thust flange to flange was slightly different? Like .004 Not sure. But you should check the thrust clearance real close and see what you have. It may be too much or too little. Factory spec is .002 to .007 with max allowable being .010

It is the diameter thats listed as different. I've installed and set the thrust, dial indicator claims .005" clearance, can't figure out what problem I'm overlooking?

If the block is machined big enough in dia for the later bearing to fit, then there should be no problem.

I don't know about 360's but I suspect the differance is the same as early vs late big block bearings & this photo should explain the change...

Thanks to Brandon @ 440 Source for the photo...

Bearing width & diameter are the same, it's the thrust face diameter that is larger...

Right. The late(wide) thrust bearing fit's well inside the relief area in the block and cap. Therefore my question.

I'd like to hear it from a professional engine builder but it seems like it is Ok to me...

If the bearing fits and the crank spins then you don't have an issue , on a big block there is no way you would get the large thrust bearing in an early block as the picture above shows .

i like the 4948MA bearing better. either should work fine. it just depends on if you want 1/2 or 3/4 groove

Same for small blocks>

No problem running the narrow thrust bearing on the wide later blocks but you can't run the later wide thrust in the early blocks.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

"but you can't run the later wide thrust in the early blocks."

Have you tried it or just repeating something you heard? What problem did you find? I still haven't found the issue in doing this.

I'm not worried about a 3/4 groove on this deal,it's not mine and it won't make enough power or rpm to be a threat to itself. Thanks
