I am setting up my new gears for the Dart, 742, 8 3/4". Pinion depth calls for 2.717", it's at 2.7175", back lash is at .007", 25# pre load on the pinion, new gears.

Drive side. New, I added a .010" shim to the pinion. Now what?

I'm not sure I would be happy with that. I think I had the gears in and out of my Dana 5 times before I was happy with the pattern. Set up bearings are awesome.

Don't rely on the gauge. The contact pattern is everything. Look at the shape of the pattern. An ideal pattern is wide, with soft rounded edges. It should not look like a knife blade.

Pinion is too far away. Try 0.010" thicker shim then post the result.

Thanks Cass, I'll take it apart tomorrow AM and reset the pinion depth. Brian, you're right on the set up bearings, I just hate to spend $60 on something I won't use for a long time.

That set up wouldnt last too long under good power, Im sure it would be noisy on the coast side too.
I sgree with the upper right picture in the manual. .010 thou spacer probably will get ya there. I had my dads dana in and out probbably 6-7 times. I even had the factory dodge scooter block, and pinion depth tools.

What a pain..

Add 0.010" more.

What is your total shim pack thickness? 742 castings usually set up around 0.090"

It's been almost more fun than I can stand. It took an hour to get the pre load right. I had to walk away from it for a while . Plus my brother was changing the steering box on his diesel so had to help him too. I'm thinking about putting .020" in it and checking again. It sure is a burden being born stupid (me).

Don't set the preload until you get the pattern right. Otherwise, you must constantly juggle preload shims.

I would try another 0.010". If that is too much, I would decrese the pack 0.005"

Tomorrow is a new day . Before church I'll pull it apart and go again. Some of you know I broke the previous gear set. When I tore it down I found some interesting stuff. The (chevy) guy who set it up runs a repair shop and some very fast nitrous cars, low 5s, high 4s in the 1/8 mile. The rear pinion bearing had been clearenced with a burr and would slide on and off the pinion with no resistance. The pinion showed signs of movement in the rear bearing, also and the pinion depth shims were crushed to the point one was in two pieces and another was broken, all were distorted. This is why I'm learning to do it myself.

Thanks guys for you're patience and advice .

What pinion setter you using?
that far off from initial indication?
calibration or cleanliness issue on initial reading?
A bit agravating to redo many times but its good learning process, looking close to good.

that should work, pull and coast sides back to back , and slightly to the inside.

lets see if you can break it again.

You are getting better at making a visible pattern.

Put that .003" back.

Sounds like your good to go if the pattern is pretty consistant all the way around.

Cass, it looks pretty good in all three places I checked it. I had bl backed up one notch and it was .013"-.014".
