Believe it or not I have been into my mopars since the late 70s and I have never really looked or cared about numbers matching issues as I have always known the history of all of my cars now as i am possibly going to sell a couple of them how does the vin actually show up in the engine # and manual trans, and rear end, on 68 high performance plymouth's? thanks

First off there is NO VIN on the rear axle assembly on any mopar of that era .

68 is stamped on the bellhousing flange near the oil pressure sensor and in the same spot on an automatic or on the id pad on the side of the trans on a 4 speed . It will be the last 8 of the VIN , and will NOT match the number stamped on the body . the only way to tie the body number to the VIN is with the FACTORY BROADCAST sheet .

No VIN or Sequence numbers on Dana 60 axle housings, but the assembly numbers and date codes stamped into them would have aligned with the cars Scheduled Production Date so it's always nice to check and confirm them. After the basic VIN/SO numbers have been found to match, dated coded parts are the "next level" when it comes to checking originallity IMO

Matt, Hemi's would have the number stamped in the location that John pointed out.

Post a pic of your number and I'll try to figure out what you are looking at. Here's a guess before seeing a pic.

4262447004 = 426 Cubic inches 2447 April 09, 1968 004 4th engine assembled on shift

That looks like the assembly number that would be found on the bottom oil pan rail of the engine?

Here's what a trans stamping looks like (passenger side raised pad)

I saw the picture John, I am going down to the garage to find all of the numbers. Like i said I never really cared about the number stuff as I have had all of my cars for years, Im kind of embarrassed! And I just and out of the 14 cars I have 12 broadcast sheets that i have just found and some extras that i will post soon. Of course my hemi car is one of the broadcast sheets I dont have?

is that number CAST or STAMPED ?? CASTING numbers are pretty much USELESS to identity the trans.

you want to look at the STAMPED numbers on the pad picture scott posted above .

You should post a pic of the trans numbers, that looks like a later model trans if I am deciphering it correctly. The rear end dates seem to align with the engines assembly date, those tow are likely original to the car.
