With your rear tires just of the ground , What should the angle be on the rear shackels? Should the bottom of the shackel be towards the front or back. How many degrees. The reason I am asking is , sometimes the car picks up the front end a small bit , than drops and unloads the tires. I have an Alterktion front suspenson and all I can get is 3 1/2 shock travel.

I think that is all you can get with the Alterktion front suspension , shocks are very short. I have Rancho 9 way shocks , I set them at 9 , I have tried them at 7 when the track has bad traction.

Have you taken a video to see whats happening... 3 1/2 is pretty short for a heavier car(not a tube chassis)

Here is a video when I first ran it. Since than I lowered the rear and it hooks better , but still does not lift the front end the way it should. Weight is 49.5% front , 50.5% back. My best 60 ft on a real good track was 1.44 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VM1T2zYnzfQ

When I have the rear tires of the ground I put an angle meter on the shackel and it is pointing 7* towards the front.

I am suprized you can get a 1.44 you car doesnt transfer, I wish your camera man was taking the pic from a quartering angle so you can see the front and the rear tire... you can hear your spinning.... the rear doesnt move neither does the front... what was the tire pressure. To me the whole car looks like its binding up

Tire pressure at that time was 18 lbs M/T street radials. After I lowered the rear I got the 1.44 60 ft . I believe on that run it was around 1.51.

When you say "lowered" are you talking tire pressure or you lowered the rear of the car... if you can lower the rear of the car, that would help... but what is the tire pressure now... have you tried even lower yet

When I put the boxes in to move the springs into the frame rails I drilled two sets of holes for the front spring eye . one in the stock location , the other two are higher in the box , which allowed me to lower the back of the car.
I have tried air pressure from 11 lbs to 22 lbs , now it likes it at 21 lbs. In the last year the engine was down on power , just last week I did a leakdown test , the cylinders were down 23% ( 150 lbs cranking pressure. I just reringed it this past week , will be going to the track this weekend. Is it possible I am not getting any rotation because the angle on the shackel is towards the front. If so I have split mono leaf springs . I can drill a new hole for the center bolt on the rear leaf to change the angle towards the rear.

As the pinion tries to rotate up its tilting down on the rear of the spring.... as soon as the shackle gets to vertical it pulls the body down(which is pulling the axle up)... do you have clamps on the rear of the springs... if so take 1 or 2 off You want the front of the spring STIFF but you want the rears fairly soft

Should never go forward of vertical...
Let me apologize for asking such a dumb question, but if you jack the car up like the OP said he did (and I am assuming he didn't jack it up under the diff, sorry if you did), what would prevent the shackle from pointing forward? If I put mine up on jack stands, under the frame in front of the tires, I'm positive my shackles point forward too. Wouldn't the weight of the diff, with tires off the ground, cause the springs to "bow" down, pulling the shackles forward?
I have the same set up as Caper, and am trying to get the most out of my set-up too.
Thanks
gary

I checked the angle on the rear shackels today. with the frame rails level the car sitting on the rear wheels it is 26* the bottom of the shackel pointing to the rear. When I lift the rear tires of the ground it is 8* pointing to the front. I found out why my 60 ft dropped off . Last fall I was after raising the front end 3 " for ground clearence while street driving. Forgot to lower it at the first of the year. It sucks getting old and forgetfull.

When you jack up the car(frame) both sides of the spring bow... if you are under acceleration the front segments are trying to tip up while tipping the rears down(front is lifting the body but also pushing down on the diff) and now the rear segments are trying to pull the body back down but the difference is in the shackle, its allowing the spring to basically move forward till its vertical ... remember its trying to pull pull down... once it gets to vertical its the spring is just loading it harder... not letting it go forward

Shoot for an angle of 45 degrees. You might have to make new upper holes for the rear shackles, and you can make longer than stock ones if you desire more rear rise. This photo is off my dart back in 1985 with two inch longer shackles, 45 degrees angle at rest, SS springs.
