coal slag USER CAUTION!: Normal usage of BLACK MAGICŪ as an abrasive blasting media may cause mechanical breakdown of the product with the potential of producing significant amounts of respirable(< 10 micron) dusts. In addition, the potential for exceeding the TLV and Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of a toxic material must be evaluated depending on the nature of the surface treated. For example, using BLACK MAGICŪ for abrasive blasting of a surface covered with lead based paint can pose a risk for exceeding the TLV or PEL for lead. Iron Oxide: 1-60% Sulfur Trioxide: 0-15% Amorphous Silica: 1-55% Phosphorus Pentoxide: 0-1% Crystalline Silica: < 1% Aluminum Oxide: 15-40% Titanium Dioxide: 0-5% Calcium Oxide: 0-30% Magnesium Oxide: 0-6% Sodium Oxide: 0-2
Breathing dust containing silica will cause silicosis, a fatal lung disease. Breathing dust during blasting operations will cause asbestosis, lead poisoning and/or other serious or fatal diseases. A NIOSH-approved, well-maintained, supplied-air abrasive blasting respirator must be used by anyone blasting, anyone handling or using the abrasive and anyone in the area of the dust. Harmful dust containing toxic material from abrasives or surfaces being blasted can remain suspended in the air for long periods of time after blasting has ceased. Failure to avoid the above danger will result in death or serious injury.
safer than sand but still need to be careful. ever see any old coal miners?
crushed glass works really well and is cheap. i would use glass over black magic
OMG I should be dead by now!
Glass beads are way more $$ and are just as nasty to breath.
I've done a little blasting over the years, alot actually.

i didnt say glass beads. i said crushed glass, beads are 4x the price and do the same job.
were all invicible until we die.lol
Have never used crushed glass except in my blast cabinet when the glass beads turn to dust. Thanks I'll look into it.
The building supply place I buy some of my media quit selling silica sand about 5 years ago because of the health risks. It's still used today with the proper precautions. Anyway they started selling slage and it works just as good, IMO There another abrasive company in town that sells plastic and other media, but it is 440 bucks for a 200# drum of urea plastic. It can and is designed to be reused as it splinters on impact keeping it's jagged shape for cutting. Silica sand on the other hand is not as effective the second time around because it get's smoother upon impact. Slage splinters some also upon impact making it better than silca sand for reuse.

you may get away with glass most likely you will need to scrape it off first. torch/scraper style

the problem with silica sand is when it hits the piece your blasting it breaks up into (FISHOOK)shaped particals that when breathed in get stuck on your lungs, your cilia mucus hairs cant bring them back up,so DONT, even if your using a seprate air resp,do not take it off if your still in the blast area,a good practice on any blasting, yes glass is made from silica sand but crushed glass media is made of old beer bottles and car windsheilds, when sand is melted to make glass the silica is gone or reformed ,it is now safe if you use a good 3m organic resp,i would still do it outside-jeff

Red Garnet is harder than glass or sand. Recovery to re use is higher and creates the least dust. It can come in different size grades. IMO I think this is the perfect media to use for underside blasting if you plan to do it yourself.
Where do you buy it and what does it cost???
