Well it was the first real outing for the 636 engine and on its first pull it ran great no problems but then we heard a wierd noise. We couldn't figure it out right away but when we were gonna make our second pull we found out a converter bolt was working its way out. Got it home and all four were loose!

We Doubled checked each one when tightening each bolt and had red locktight on them as well.

What can cause this and what is the solution???

This is a new trans and Convertor.

We ran the old trans and convertor with this 636ci engine once as a test run and nothing was wrong with the bolts on the old convertor.

Thanks
Doug

Well I will tell you my converter bolt story but you wont like to hear it.

A few years back mine kept coming loose and after a couple flexplates and aggravation the crank ended up breaking.

I think the crank being cracked was loosening the bolts...

There could be an imbalance in the converter and/or flex-plate.

Sounds like a vibration issue.

There have been numerous previous threads about converter bolts working loose and I don't think there was ever a common consensus as to why some do and most don't.

My suggestion for problematic bolts has always been to drill the bolts for safety wire.

Sounds like a vibration issue.

It won't fix itself, it will breaak stuff if you don't fix it now before it does break valuable parts. Harmonics and vibrations can loosen a lot of things held together with bolts and nuts, figuring out which one it(harmonics or vibrations) is, is the hard part Let us know what you find and do please, it may help someoone else on here down the road. What stroke and bore is this motor? What was the bore and stroke on the smaller one?

The torque will be coming out early this week. I need this problem fixed by next weekend. Take the torque back to the builder to make sure its balanced. Or maybe put the old torque back in and see if they don't back up with that one. Like i mentioned using this engine (636ci) and the old trans and converter we made two passes and everything was fine. One pass with the new trans and converter and all 4 bolts came loose with red lock tight.

Bore is 4.500
Stroke is 5 inch.

Engine has a solid elephant ears, solid mid plate and rubber on the the rear of trans.

I had them back out with locktite before. I started using RTV silicon on them and haven't had one come loose since. That was over 20 years ago.

You might check your driveshaft. I kept bending mine about .03 -.05 and made an awful vibration and convertor bolts kept coming loose. I went to a 4" aluminum driveshaft and the vibration stopped and convertor bolts have been tight all year.

start with new converter bolts, spray brakekleen in converter holes, red loctite and after you get bolts tight, hit vthe wrench with a hammer for extra torque, you probably didnt go tight enough.
