I actually had it lowered about two inches. The guy that did the hood screwed up. It was not supposed to keep getting taller as it went back.

However, when you guys can figure out how to put a Predator headed 654 with a sheet T/R and two fours under the hood without it being that tall, you let me know.
We are not allowed forward facing scoop for the most part.

Old pic, but you get the idea...

And, besides an airscoop facing rearward looks unlogical, I also THINK rearfacing scoops just don't work.

Not true, we tested a 4 and 6" cowl on the same car against a HEMI scoop. The cowl was actually faster every time. I catches the air from the windshield, and lots of it.

Why is there a rule for rear facing scoops ONLY. How is such a goofy rule even created...must be NHRA. Rule was probally created by the same guy that created the new points system for the Pro's??

Believe me, I AGREE. It's not NHRA tho.
It's the local heads up stuff. Not just local to me either.

The idea was to keep the radial cars looking "street" like for the fans. Never mind the f/c cage and chute.

The motor comes out 6 1/2 inches from the fender line. Forward, backward, big bulge with no opening, it still has to be taller than the motor. Not real street like, but I didn't make the rules.

Straight from ORSCA website for E/Z street rules...
Body
Stock bodylines must be retained. Fiberglass pieces limited to hood and bumpers and deck. Hood scoops allowed but must not protrude above halfway position on windshield. No forward facing hood scoops allowed, unless equipped from factory. All factory glass windows required . Lexan not allowed (Trucks may replace rear window with Lexan for roll bar exit). Factory spoilers allowed. After market or custom wings not allowed. Factory grill and headlights required. Complete factory core support and inner fenders required but may be notched for header or roll bar clearance. Stock floor pans required front to rear but may be notched for sub-frame connectors. Trunk pan may be notched for fuel cell or fuel pump placement, but must remain intact. Wheelbase must remain within factory specs, within +/- 1"

Randy I admire your car and efforts but do you really think a large cowl hood looks like a street car? I would work on getting that bs rule changed. sounds like a rule made by someone who runs a cowl hood and thinks there is an advantage to the other cars that have a front faced scoop

I would agree with that. Don't think that they don't pickup air. I watch the cowl hood on the Demon lift up all the time down track so they must pull a heck of a lot of air off the windshield.

Personal preference is what it is, and they DO look great on some mopars. The best reason I know of to use one is ability to spy on the carb area after you get one of them POPS through the carb, you can keep an eye on the magnitude of your fireball, if any.

I remember a while back NHRA(I think) talked to W.J. about forward facing scoops on the Prostock cars. He said in the testing he/they did it took a certain number of hp to push it through the air but I guess the rewards are worth it...ram air effect.
In the yellow Demons case the cowl hood was put on so it would be more aerodynamic.

Easier said than done, lol. They are starting to allow more stuff. I will probably end up getting it cut and making a lexan top for the carbs. That seems to be acceptable. My scoop actually doesn't look as bad as it does in that pic now that I had it lowered. It was terrible then, but it was done about two days before that race so there was nothing that could be done. My hood weighs 31lbs, so I need a new one anyway. It's a heavy duty bolt on type.

The only good thing I can say about my cowl hood is it does not try to come off. That said it worked great with Nitrous but is a power killer for me on my car. Trying to redirect air before going out again. 900Hp should easily run more than 152 MPH @ 2,940. My big engine really shuts down on top end 144 MPH with cowl hood. It pulls great in low gear but in high gear gives up at 8,000 RPM. On chassis dyno we don't have those problems.

Career best 8.02 @ 169 at 3050# and 10" tires small block power.

the original design of the cowl hood scoop was to direct cool air by picking it up from deflecting it off the windshield

And it does function fairly well. There is a high pressure area at the base of the windshield.

And to those that posted they went slower, have you given any consideration that the difference in air (be it less or more with the cowl hood) affected your a/f ratio at certain speeds?

Just a though.....

Cowl hoods DO FLOW AIR into the engine.

I dont like the looks either.

I used to care but....... things have changed
