whats your timing at? vacuum advance hooked up? it could be on vacuum advance at idle that disappears whenyou put it in gear. disconnect thevacuum advance and plug it at the carb. set the timing to 15-20 degrees initial and see what it does
I have the vacumn hooked up and the timing at 10 degree's Just took it for a ride and it is really lazy in low gear but much better in 2nd and drive.Stopped and put the timing up a little and it was better didn't ping but not great. Thanks

I agree with the others on the vacuum advance. Set timing without it, but still use it even if you adjust it so it doesn't contribute much
Personally, I think your idle problem is the carbs being too lean at idle...mine did what you describe...took a lot of playing around to get it. A vacuum gage absolutely helps to do it.
