was out playing today after playing with my carbs. made a few adjustments and took it to my private drag strip for a test.

Good news id that the LM1 shows i may have cured the lean spot in first when i punch it. better news is that the change to the brown accel cam and 35 squirter and purple outboard springs shows I may have picked up a whole bunch of acceleration (1/4 to a 1/2 sec through second)

bad news is that when i put it in reverse to make my second pass i get NOTHING. nada. no move. I put it in 1sr and i drive back to the shop the long way. 1st 2nd and 3rd seem fine.

no reverse.

Any clues what i broke? I have a transmission guy who'll fix me up but im wondering what i did to it. any clues?

the trans was rebuilt last year with new clutches, bands, seals, 4.2 lever, cheetah VB, hi flow filter and bolt in sprag.

BTW, its actually not a bad thing. i have a new converter, a new super sprag i want to throw in there and I'll be getting a new steel drum just for the heck of it. ive been looking for a reason to pull the 727 out so i can upgrayed it

if you lost reverse and nothing else...

check rear servo...rear band strut...and rear band adjustment

i had a clue this was coming. this morning i went to a friends house he's building and parked in his driveway.

went i went to leave, i wanted to leave some rubber backing out of his new driveway. when I held the brake and gassed it, it reved up good and i thought i was leaving my marks until i backed out and saw NOTHING on the driveway. i thought "thats weird, wheres the burnout?" and I drove home and into the shop. backing out to make my test run, it backed out just fine. until after the run when i tried to back up for run #2- NOTHING.

i can feel it go in to reverse (rpms drop slightly) but no go.

thats the big cludgey looking linkage in there with the small 1" by 1.5" steel plate right?

When i bought the cheetah valve body, i also bought the heavy duty retainer for the heavy duty servo spring they give you. I wonder if maybe that snap ring came out???? it was kind of a bear to get int there working under the car.

i'll check it tomorrow after checking the band adjustment

The band adjustment that can be accessed from outside the trans case is 2nd gear... Reverse is the rear band & to access it you'll need to drop the pan...

yup, at least the pan has a drain plug and i have the good reusable pan gasket.

not so bad, i wanted to put some type F back in there anyways. i had to refill with dextron a few months ago when my tranny line came off and dumped several quarts on the track (i already fixed the line with couplers and got rid of the hose clamps that caused THAT problem)

well, i may have figured it out. my low/reverse band was super loose. like 5 1/5 turns out. i may have a worn drum. I tightened it up- torqued it to 70 in-lbs, then backed it off 2 turns. i barely have much thread left on the adjuster as the lock nut is flush with the last thread.

i can see the drum has some wear. hopefully, the band (new last year) isnt toast.

i'll know more min a few hours when i get some more type F fluid and give it a ride

It will likely work fine for now, try to minmize the burnouts in reverse & expect to replace the band & drum when it comes apart...

seems to done the trick. the car is multidirectional again. i can go forward and backward!!

I wonder how long it will last? I saw they make and sell some longer struts in the my Torqueflight Transmission handbook that are used if the drum is machined. I'm thinking I should pick them just in case.

Thanks all!

With the adjuster in that far chances are they're both worn beyond limits.

naw, i just need a new drum and a new band.

too much torque will do that to a transmission

Not if they're built right...

Or operated right, if LBA equipped lots of manual 1-2 upshifting will hasten the rear drum/band wear especially if no servo mods have been done.

no doubt. with 116,000 miles on a stock drum, tons of manual 1st to 2nd shifts, i could fully understand how the drum can be worn.

what kind of servo mods would help prevent this? The cheetah forward manual/auto valve body is a LBA VB, isn't it?

If the VB has compression braking in 1st gear it's LBA and the band is applied/released on each 1-2 shift cycle. The stock servo needs to be rigidized and a heavier spring installed but this might have already been done when the VB was installed.

thanks. yes, the VB came with a much stiffer spring and i purchased the heavy duty retainer for it

Even with the correctly modified servo there is a lot of drag as the band releases on the 1-2 upshift, it was never designed to be used on a continuous basis.
