My 73 Dodge truck has issues of no power, and when accelerating it sounds like theres popping(backfiring) in the crankcase. The truck also runs 100psi of oil pressure.

None of this sounds normal.Ive checked the plugs, they all look ok. Ive replaced the cap, rotor and wires, and it still does it. Where else should I look? What could be causing all this?

Sounds like maybe the cam is out of sync with the crank. If it's high miles, I'd be looking at the timing chain and make sure it did not jump a tooth or have to much slack, broken teeth etc.

Is it missing when you get on it? What eng, how long doing it, any new mods? I would suggest R&R ing the plugs even though they look OK they CAN be deceptive. 100 psi is too high, I'm assuming cold on startup, how long has it been that high, how much when hot at idle and at cruise. Pressure reg might be sticky/stuck. I'd put a racing filter on there just to make sure it didn't burst which 100 psi is capable of doing just that(not a for certain that it would) but for the price of one of those filters I'd want the peace of mind & if it's a BB 1st take out the reg/spring out of the pump & see what you see.

Its a 400 BB in my truck. It runs 100 psi regardless of anything,(according to the gauge in the dash)

When I got the truck last week it ran like crap and I decided to tune it up. The plug wires were off 1 tower to the right(counterclockwise) it runs better, but still runs like crap,no power and stalls at stoplights. I timed it and its right about where it needs to be.

It pops under load, not all the time but pretty regularly. Just flat out runs like poo and also (at times) makes a noise like if you were to tap a hammer on the driveshaft, sort of a hollow metallic sound. Could that be the chain slapping around?

Firing order right? If so...my money is on...rocker arm/pushrod issue, valve spring or....flat cam lobe!Pull the covers and have a look.

Did you change the oil? Timing chain may be toast!

Now that you mention it,it may be pinging I hear.

I havent changed the oil yet. Im very frustrated with this thing, and am wondering if I want to even put anymore work into it.Im gonna set it in storage for a few days and let my frustration settle down, then try to go back and tackle it in a fresh state of mind.

(1) pull/plug the vac adv or retard the initial 5-7.5 degrees & see if it stops rattling. (2) excellent plan, sometimes you just gotta step away for a bit. good luck.

You should confirm the dash guage reading with a good mechanical guage connected to the engine , is the oil pump new ? also check the sender , does it like someone , or have you , replaced it ?

As far as replacement goes,I havent touched it. The friend I got the truck from says he never did ANYTHING to the truck in the 3 years he owned it. He got it for a good price and maybe only drove it 2X in the entire time he owned it.

Sounds like a wiped lobe or broken spring?
