I have a friend with a 68 Coronet R/T Convert 440 auto that I am helping him replace his fuel tank and it currently has a 5/16 sending unit in it. I thought all 440 magnums came with the 3/8 unit? The tanks is not original but he says the sender was transfered to the new tank 20 some years ago???? Anybody know for sure? THANKS!

Steve

The 69 440 B-Bodies all had a 3/8" sending unit with a 5/16" fuel line.....I don't have a 68 to check but I'll check with someone who does.

Thanks fish, any help is greatly appreciated! I've had a few 68 B Bodys over the years and am getting too old to remember all the vital stats on em anymore!

Cheers

5/16 is correct but upgrading to 3/8 certainly wouldn't hurt anything...

Thanks Wild R/T I believe the fuel line is 5/16 & also thought it should be 3/8. My Charger has 3/8 line and sender but it is the HEMI I know, just seems like I remember the Magnum 440 Cars having the same 3/8 fuel lines.......hate gettin old.

BTW I have a 68 Coronet R/T vert.. 440/727 car...

be prepared for the new sending unit not to work 100%.
it wont go to full, only 3/4 the way full.
im on my 4th sending unit from every retailer who sells them.
unless something im doing wrong, it wont show full.

I've been through that... Next time I think I'm going to try having the original rebuilt...

i pulled mine out 7 different times and went through at least 14 keystone clamps, i tried everything to get it to work.
what i dont understand, i plugged in the sending unit switch wire to the unit, turned on the ignition switch, flipped up the lever and it read full on the gauge, i go and installed it and all i can get is 3/4 full with a totally full tank.

You need an old fuel tank you can cut a hole in & see how far the arm actually travels... I doubt it hits the upper travel limiter made into the sender...

I'd start checking things that can be checked. My replacement worked the first time. This article has some useful information. Mopar Gauges It says "Most problems relate to the fuel gauge sender, which should read 61 to 85 ohms ‘empty’, and 8.6 to 10.6 ohms ‘full’ If the sender is within these specs, the ground at the tank strap is in place (fig. 2), and the wiring, right up to the gauge, is okay, then the gauge itself is shot."

I'd check the resistance when full. After doing something about the gas (I'd drive it almost empty) remove the sender and see if it can move full up. There are tabs that limit max deflection that can be bent for calibration purposes. See if you can get the resistance down to the 9 volt range. If that's good, you can bend the arm down. I don't think this is the problem, but if it is, reading empty when empty is more important than reading full when full.

If the sender reads good, check for low resistance from the back of the sender to the car body.

If everything's good so far, and the other gauges work fine, then it's probably the gauge. There are adjustments inside them for calibration.

I have the exact issue going on with my 68 Road Runner. After buying a second sender and having the tank only read 3/4 when full. I compared the repro with my original and saw that the swing arm sits .75" higher on the repro compared to the original. I'm guessing that the float is hitting the top of the tank before getting full swing. When I get back to the garage I will remove it one more time and bend the arm to match the full swing height of the original. I do not have the numbers in front of me but I seem to recall the original was 7" from the sock sitting level to the top of the swing float and the repro was 7.75". It will be a few weeks yet before I can verify the fix.

Good Luck

Jim

Yeah but when you bend the arm to only hit 7.0" it will now not read empty when it reaches the bottom of the tank...

Yup - 70 was the year the 440 got the 3/8" fuel line to go with the 3/8" sender they already had in 69.

I don't think you can say this with certainty. I bent mine a bit and get full when full and empty when empty.

Thanks for all the great feedback! Here is a pic before we start the surgery. I ordered a 3/8 sender and will adjust the float level as needed!

Never say never...I've seen 3/8" pick-ups in '68 440 GTXs. I would guess that both were used depending what was available at that moment(or the level of training).
