The 230 "cold weather block" was cast in the last 6 months of 71 for the 72 model so if it has a 71 cast date then should be good to go. I've got up to 450.00 for a nice early block.

there are 2 230 blocks , those cast BEFORE 10/10/71 AND those cast AFTER , the ones BEFORE are the cold weather blocks with thick main webs , the ones after are NOT .

OK- so only those early 230 blocks have thick mains, the rest are normal blocks like all other 400s? The 440source website doesn't mention that (My eyes could have skipped over it too  ).
Is a normal 400 block worth $200, or does that seem kinda pricey?

They're all good! http://www.440source.com/blockinfo.htmShown above is the #2 saddle on a late model (76-78) 400 block, casting #4006530-400. The "B" measurement remains the same as the early 400 block at about .525 -.575, while the "A" goes down to roughly 3.300, making the support only less than half an inch narrower then the early 400 (still almost 90% of the width), and still over 1 1/4 inches wider then 383's and early 440's.

you need to make that decision , i edited my original reply and added BEFORE 10/10 , i have to look at the linked thread , it might be 10/17 ??? i get confused .
anywho , is it JUST a GREASY disassembled block ? as quikd100 states without a SONIC CHECK its a crap shoot . i have a 230 thick web block , it was locked up when i got it . it's still std bore and between rust pits AND CORE SHIFT it NEEDS 5 sleeves , good thing i got it cheap  if the rumor is true about low deck megablocks coming down the pike cold weather blocks will be relegated to what the rest of the stock factory blocks are ... worth their weight in SCRAP without magnaflux AND sonic check ...
i am also dealing with a 69 440 HP block right now that has questionable integrity for anything over a STOCK rebuild .
