Choke mounting bolts. Mine are the very UNCOMMON blank top bolts.

Enjoy!

Nice details Bill, thanks for posting. Do you have any other examples (from survivor orange engines?).

ADDED BONUS!

Here is another 71 340 Cuda convertible I have in my registry, equipped just like mine (Same FE5 body color, non-A/C with manual brakes), except this is a 4-speed. It was built one day before mine on 3/30/71.

Scott,

My intake is the "Spring 71" version, with the hump on the runner.

I have been made aware of a local gentleman here in NJ who supposedly has a fairly unabused 71 hardtop, which I am told has an orange engine. I will advise on that in the near future. Also, I believe that there is a gentleman who is a Moparts member, whose name I believe is Morris, who resides in FL. I believe he is an actual original owner of a 71 340 Cuda. Perhaps he will see this and respond.

Other than Bill Sefton's car, of which I had received many photos directly from him a few years ago, there don't seem to be many 71's in any body style that are legitimately untouched, or close to it.

Did all 71 340s, not use the right angle oil filter adaptor, or just the blue painted engines not using it?

Same question about the dip stick.
Did all 71 340s, have the black painted dip stick, or just the blue painted engines having the black dip stick?

Thanks. Great info here. I hope this makes it to the archives.

The right angle oil filter adapter MAY be an A-Body thing (I had that setup in my 71 340 Duster). Also, 71 E-Body 340 exhaust manifolds and exhaust pipes were different than 70. Additionally, if the distance between the torsion bars is less on an A-Body than on an E-Body, that may play into possible clearance issues as well.

I have an NOS dipstick, and it has a black handle. And as far as I know, all 340's had a black handle, but I would need a bit more research to determine that for sure. I have two local AAR Cuda's to check on!

Just spoke with Mike Ross of BEA, he has a 3-30-71 SPD Cuda 340 4 speed, 3:91 rear. Car VIN sequence #342653. It has a door VIN decal 3/71. Car has an original orange engine.

Most interesting!

The car I referenced in the last photos is 342575 (SPD same day, 3/30/71). One correction: It is EV2, not FE5. Sorry for the oversight. But it obviously has a blue engine. Does Mike's car have Windsor or Mound Road engine? Does the right side valve cover have a wire trough? (342575 was sold several years ago. I know who bought it, but he resold it immediately, and I do not know where it is now.)

Another tidbit: In my archive photos, the door sticker on 342575 shows 4-71. My car, built a day later, shows 3-71.

My engine in 344342 (3/31/71) is a Mound Road engine (Code GM on the block).

Chet Greenwood informed me that his convertible, 332846 (3/19/71) originally had a blue engine. I believe he repainted it orange during restoration.

Please excuse the silver paint.

My 71 Duster is a July 9th build date, blue engine and has the right angle oil adapter.

The only touch ups here were:
Redone air cleaner
new battery cables.
other than that nothing else was changed.
The valve covers were the original removed a week after purchase of the car when new they still have the original paint on them. This car is great for the fine details Scott.

moparo,

Don't get me wrong, not picking on your car/engine, it looks fantastic. However that looks like blue paint overspray on the upper rad hose, back of the alternator, assosiated wiring harness, and throttle return spring? If so that isn't original.

Bill, the photos in question are of a survivor 1972 340 engine (yellow Duster detailed in a survivor thread here on Moparts) there are a few pics on page 2 of this thread.

*BTW bill, I have'nt gotten anymore info on Mikes 71 Cuda engine yet.

This engine in this picture also appears to have been manipulated a bit. Notice the by pass hose. The paint density is not consistent with the intake port that it is directly connected to. It shows an impossible paint pattern for two pieces that were supposedly painted together. The hose has a thin over spray look to it while the intake is heavily covered. Paint on rubber does not wear off or thin out over time. It would have either flaked or chipped off. The picture of the blue survivor engine that is posted earlier in this thread conveys the correct look that the hose would have exhibited if it was painted on the engine. -Clamps have been changed however.-
