Almost ready to pull the motor and trans out of the 65'

I bought a CRT trans last year, ,,and it's been sitting in the garage, ,,waiting to be installed. Doing it now,,,to have the car ready for Norwalk and Monster Mopar in Sept...

The current trans has not been out of the car/freshend in at least 5 years ??...

Had the convertor done with TA last year....

Had the front end, K frame, tubular work done last month with BondoBob,,,so hoping it will be easy just to pull the trans and motor together,,,and re-install,,,,have lots more room as far as pan clearance now....previously i could never pull them together due to the tight clearance with the K frame....

Is there a specific lock tite "color" stength to use on the convertor bolts when i re-install ??

Also wondering if the car will "pick up" any with a fresh CRT tranny ?

Man did my plugs look a bit rough,,,hadnt changed them since last year,,,they were a bit tough to remove from the Eddy heads,,,( i usually put anti-sieze on them ),,,,

Also going to re-do the Caltrac's,,,i ordered a new bushing kit,,,,the front eye(s) on mine are not right,,,wrong spacer in there now,,,with lots of binding ,,, so i ordered the correct size spacer,,to free things up..current 60' are 1.41-1.43,,,, maybe this will improve as well with the Caltrac changes....

572 INDY motor coming next year,,,,hope to run the NSS class someday..............

Have everything unhooked,,,,just have to drain the tranny fluid,,,drop the cross member,,,,and pull the motor and trans....

Doug

Doug, I alway's use loctite 272, it's for a higher temp and good for fasteners up to 1.50" dia, 271 will work but I like he higher temp better, both are red in color.

Doug,
You must like to do a lot of work, I would never pull the engine for a tranny swap, unless there was something I was going to check in the engine,

just unbolt the trans, pull the headers, and drop that baby out, slip the new one in it's place and bolt it back together.

I got a wild hair a couple years ago, I was going to freshen a tranny myself, and see if I could get it to work, never had done one before, the one in my car had been in it for 12 seasons, and had around 2000 runs on it, believe it or not, just regular oil changes, and a band adj, ever so often, I just knew it had to be worn slap dab out, so I did the swap, everything was good, I finally got around to busting the other one open to freshen it up for a spare, and the clutches still had the writing on them, steels looked as new as the ones I had for the freshen up, bands were in great shape, it really didn't need anything done to it, maybe I was just lucky, but I went ahead and freshened it up anyway for a spare.

Maybe your's will still be good, and slip it back for a spare, as far as performance, I didn't see a nickels worth of difference between either of mine.

Good luck, maybe it'll make your car come around, I have always wanted to have one of those professional built jobs, but could never make myself pay the coins, they cost, I'm just plain tight.

Dave

Doug you can pull the trans out of the 65 with out pulling the engine. I pulled it out one year three times and you do not have to pull the headers to get the trans out. I think you are just getting practice for next year when you put the 572 in.lol but best of luck to you doug. I would like to take your old trans apart just to see how it looks inside. Bobby

Doug, invest in one of those engine levelers for
pulling the engine and trans together, with the carb
plate like you have its alot more work and man handling

I have had the trans out of the car about 3 times since owning it,,,usually just drop it from underneath,,with the wife adjusting the jack stands,,,lol
I wanted to do some other stuff with the motor while i had it out...and wanted to see if the motor/trans combo would clear the new K frame,,etc,,,plus i got some time before Norwalk,,,,lol

yup,,,that's how i did it before,,,when i did the convertor swap,,etc,,,I still wonder about the front drum in the existing trans grenading,,,so i want to get the CRT trans in,,,,and maybe send the "old" one out for a re-do,,and keep it as a spare,,,,

Mike and Hot,,,i have a engine leveler i bought from Harbor Freight,,,they are local here in Louisville,,,,,should be pretty smooth......

thanks guys,,,,,,,,

An engine leveler is priceless, and I have always pulled the engine/trans together to get to the transmission...I don't have a lift, and working under the truck makes me nervous. Nothing like a little earthquake to ruin your day.

Make sure to clean the bajessus out of the threads with brake cleaner or eq before applying any loctite.

I don't blame you Doug i think you are going fast enough now to need the billet drum. so what are you going to do to to the engine or is it a trade secret? lol. Bobby

Bobby,
Yup,,,I had John (CRT) look at what i needed for the car,,,and the new trans has the billet drum, RMVB, etc...
No major plans for the motor,,,wanted to clean it up a bit,,also curious to see how easy it will be to pull the motor and trans together with the new K frame clearance.

Thanks for the info on the covertor bolts,,,
I am also without a hoist,,and usually have to do this on the garage floor,,,jack stands, floor jack, 2x4, wife assisted,,etc,,, I dont think it will take me much longer to pull the entire thing out.....

thanks guys,,,,,,

Doug

Motor is in, just waiting on offset lifters and pushrods. Shouldn't be too long. I would like to see yours at the valley when you get it back together. Let me know if you need any help.
