Hi, Can anyone tell me what causes the clutch to clatter and shake the car when starting to move in 1st? It's a new clutch and it didn't do it in the beginning. Thanks, Jim
I'm sure you know, the clutch needs to be broken it easy, so no hard thrashing for the 1st.4-500 miles, alot of city driveing (stop & go) seats them quicker, other issues could be oil getting on the disc. What type/brand of clutch did you get, & did you re-place or re-surface the flywheel? Clutch chatter is not a good sign, but its common on a ceramic style disc. I would drive it some more in stop & go traffic, maybe its still trying to seat.

Clutchs don't need to be broken in! Oldest wives tale ever. If it has chatter or shakes when taking off look at your mounts, if they are good, replace it again. the springs in the clutch are lose.

I whole heartily disagree, if you think the surfaces don't need to seat properly, thats your opinion, i know the FACTS, if you don't beleive it, ask ANY clutch manufacture in the country on your theory (or wives tail) & you'll be lauched at, i'll take there word on it!!

Let me give you some information: It's a new McLeod clutch set up with a resurfaced flywheel. It didn't shake in the beginning, but started to over time. At this time, I also realized that the pedal was getting closer to the floor to disengage. We noticed that the adjustment had worked it's way down to this point. We readjusted it, and it wasn't as apparent. Driving home from Syracuse, it progressively got worse again as the adjustment again moved. I'm not sure if this is part of the problem or not, but I think it's a possibility. As for the adjustment not staying where we set it, how can I remedy that. Thanks, Jim

My last McCleod PP kept losing adjustment.Every time I launched it would have to be readjusted.Installed my CF Dual and adjusted it once after install. That was 2 years ago.Rocky

Check to make sure the clutch cross shaft arm is not bending. Clutch break-in = fantasy tale!

I drove my CF for maybe 30 miles before I used it hard. Then only a few times.Clutches are like brake.Install new brakes and rotors and pound them. They will glaze and if they dont they wont stop as good as a set that was seasoned easy.Been doing it too long to not know that.Rocky

You know what they say about opinions..... Every clutch ive had from day one got two easy launches and never looked back...never had one issue, never a blue spot on the Flywheel or PP let alone blue on the face. I dont want to drag who told me this (well known in the trans world) , but I asked what I needed to do to break my clutch in before hitting the track...was told by time its moved around a few times and off the trailer to let it rip....hasnt slipped yet, and no chatter So all these guys at the track with 4-5 speeds, go drive there rig for 50 miles to break one in....I dont think so. I'm telling you guys, you can say that proper break-in is hog wash till your blue in the face, but when your clutch starts acting up or goes out prematurely, don't go boo-whooin

Those are DRAG cars, not street cars, if your lucky they see 20 miles a months, if you & others have deep pockets & don't mind throwing cash around, that cool, but i like my stuff to last, & if the manufacture tells me its BEST to do it this way, i'm not ashamed to do it, i'll swallow my pride & take there advice. I'm not saying the clutch will shatter, blow up, or slip like mad if it isn't broken in right, it just never hurts to follow the manufactures recammendation for best results & performance from your new clutch.
