Ive been doing a little research and have a few questions. I have a 70 swinger im restoring, currently car came with a 318. I have decided i want to stick with the stock motor but get some more hp outta the engine.

From what i have been reading to get a 349 outta the 318 they sell stroker kits with 3.58" cranks and 6.123" rods and .030 over pistons.

So to make my own "kit" couldnt i just buy a new cast scat crank from summit and have my rods reconditioned to save some cash while still boring the engine .030????

Im looking to mostly have a quick street car and not a drag car thats why im sticking with the 318 and not using my 73 360. If i did this stoker would it still to practical to use a mopar single plane and edelbrock heads??? And what would be a good piston and carb this motor???

Ive rebuilt several motors but mostly using stock parts,
thanks for any help

You'd still need stroker pistons for this combo as the stroke difference(3.58 vs 3.31 = .270" would move the pistons ~.135" higher in the bore which if your intended .030" pistons are that far in the hole then yes you'd end up w a zero deck height and if your pistons have or dont have a dish you'd have to calculate your final CR & see if it's in the ballpark for what you want plus the valve notch/clearrance issue depending on your intended cam choice(plus Quench is very desireable). Depending on what you got it might be doable & if not a kit would have the proper stroker pistons.

Why throw extra money at it if your goal is to basically stick a 360 crank (3.58 inch)in a 318…just rebuild the 360 and save a lot of money. The 360 is TOTALLY streetable.

67 Barracuda street car, 408, e85, 1.38 60', 6.44 @105.9 in the 1/8 mile, 10.19 @130.5 in the 1/4...so far....

A 4" stroke is the same money as the 3.58 stroke as are the pistons for either combo. Yes you can resize your rods to save money but with the new ARP bolts and the cost of resizing both ends (IIRC the 1970 rod is bushed on the small end) your savings won't be that much.

Ive been looking at alot of different combos for a new x block build, im trying to stroke it yet keep the org bore size as small as possible.

This really isnt what id do but the link shows a pretty well done stroked 318

As long as you get the right pistons you can make what you are doing work. However, I think you are going to be dissapointed in the performance using that combination of parts you listed. It is more money, but, another option is our 390 stroker kit for the 318.( http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/produ...mp;partid=25284 ) When you compare buying all of the parts individually, paying to recondition the rods and then pay someone to balance it, the $1600 for a complete balanced kit should start to look pretty good. Plus, the torque from these 390's is amazing. Give us a call if you get time and we can work with you on a complete, matched combination of parts to help you get the reults you want.

I 2nd the 390 stroker with a whiplash cam with a 3.91 sg

just the 360 crank cut down only makes a 349 cu in,IIRC

I got more out of the stock 360 with the #302 318 heads on it than the 349 cu in stroker

but have been seeing more of the 390 strokers with the roller cam block

I am a savin up for the 390 myself
