I had fired up my car this evening and noticed that my speedo cable is leaking trans lube from the crimped fitting up by where it connects to the trans.

Why would it be leaking there?

I had the speedo made locally and then installed it myself...maybe they left out the seal inside the speedo cable adapter???....or is there a seal on the trans part of the speedo plug?

Trans part.. Pull the adapter out of the trans, pull the gear out of the adapter, look into the end of the adapter the cable screws onto & you'll see the seal which is retained by a metal ring similar to a snap ring but it's just a round spring... Any local trans shop would have the seal you need...

In the pic below you can see the internal pinion seal and its wire retaining ring.

Excellent pic John! I can see what looks like a C-clip and the black seal that it backs up to.

How does that adapter come out of the trans?

take the hold down clamp off

note the dot and the #s that referance the # of teeth on the plastic gear so it goes back in correct

the dot and the mark go together like in the pic

and there is an o-ring on the plug that goes in the tranz

There is a forked clamp held by one bolt with a 1/2" head... Remove that & the adapter will pull out... Theres an "O" ring sealing it so it takes a little effort... Replace the "O" ring while your there & pay attention to the clocking of the adapter, as you can see in John's photo there are number groups, those indicate speedo gear teeth, if you have 37 teeth then your orient the adapter so the 32-38 is facing the dot at 12 oclock...

Hey I have removed the speedo adapter and pulled the speedo gear out of it....how do I remove the spring and black seal inside of the adapter so that it wont leak when I put it back together ?

I am trying this on a spare trans that I have in my garage first but when I remove the adapter on the one in my car should I go ahead and drain the trans fluid out first because it will come gushing out when I take the speedo adapter out?

Keep the info coming guys you are great! I am learning new stuff every day with this car!

no need to drain it,use a catch pan, some will come out, helps to jack the rear of the car up

a pick will get the ring out then the seal
