I just purchased a 68 Charger R/T - 440 w/4speed needing total restoration. A major issue is that the individual who sold me the car does not have the fender tag. Small problem for me since I want to restore the car to its original condition. First question, can anyone tell me if there is anyway of finding out more about this paticular car by just the vin - options etc. I am looking at buying a rear for the car but not sure if it would have been a Dana or 8 3/4. If so, what stamping would be on the correct Dana for a 68 Charger - numbers, dates, etc. Same question for engine and transmission. Any help would be appreciated.

The 4-speed means you also had a Dana from the factory when you are talking about L code B bodies . BUT, without a fender tag or buildsheet , are you even sure it was originally a 4-speed car ? You might contact Wayne Wooten,
who runs the Dodge Charger registry, and see if he by chance knows anyone who might have a copy of your buildsheet . It's a long shot
but worth looking into.

Some things to look for regarding the 4-speed. Does it have the big square/blocky rubber bumpers on the rear axle hump area of the rear frame rails? Also, does it have the pedal support bracket in the firewall? This is located to the outside side of the master cylinder / brake booster. You will see an about 6 inch vertical bracket attached to the firewall with two studs going through.

Have you searched for a Broadcast Sheet? Under the seats, inside the seat backs.. Over the glovebox, under the carpet... Another thing to try is searching Barry's Hamtrack registry... BTW If you aren't sure if it's really an R/T the VIN should be start XS29L8....

Thanks for all the info. The car I purchased is a total resto. No seats, carpet, etc. Someone used it as a parts car. Still has a good frame, good title with VIN. Already have many of the major body parts - except doors. So, finding a broadcast sheet is out of the question unless I run along someone who has it. Thanks again.
