Ok, getting ready to put a 440 in my 71 RR. I have headers and I have manifolds, either way I can get a TTI setup that I can run out the back of the car. I am not trying to shave tenths of a second off of my ET or anything like that. I know manifolds can cost power, but how much? Headers are hot, leak, noisy etc etc etc Manifolds choke up the engine, but easy to set up compared to getting headers in.... So, maybe I am just getting older and like to do things easy, but I want to do it right also. So what do you think..and why? Defend your stand on headers or manifolds.. thanks!!! eight

Depends if the hassle of headers is worth the 10-15% increase in power they provide, only you can decide.

I dunno,
I bought a CHEAP pair of Walker headers through Summit for my BB E-body and they were the best headers I've ever purchased!
$99.00 and they fit like a glove!
Only ONE tube required cleance around the steering shaft and they had nice thick flanges. The other thing I liked is they tucked up nicely under the car (the deep sump tranny pan was lower!) yet didn't come too close to the floorboards.
As I get older, though, manifolds really look appealing...

numbers don't lie
compare column #2 & #3 (HP mani's and extrude honed mani's) vs. column #4 (1 7/8" headers) 24 peak HP increase, 25-30lb ft peak increase (heck, 20-30 lb ft increase from 2600-5600 RPM)...with a stock 440 magnum cam.
peak HP increase might be a little less, peak torque increase might be a little more (but fall off quicker) with 1 3/4" headers. if it were me, I'd use the hedman 78038 elite headers. goes over the steering, ceramic coated, 14 gage tube (should be quieter), 3/8" thick flanges (should seal better), ball and socket collectors (eliminating collector gasket blowout) and $350.

I have never had a problem with my hedman headers. I have the same gaskets that came with them and the car has been running since "02, and about 4 of those years were daily driven in the warm months. They were cheap only $150. But yeah the starter would be a bit of a pain and the spark plugs take longer but its worth the sound and performance to me. And there is ample ground clearance with them.

cheap headers or mainfolds=manifolds.tti headers or manifolds=tti. depends what your gunna do w/ the car.if you can afford 20-40 hp,go manifolds.if you can afford 750 for headers,go headers...oh..daily drivers here in michgan never have headers....for long..lol..blat blat blat tic tic blat..
have had hedman cheapies on my 5th ave daily driver since 2003. driven in winter since 2006. header pipes are still solid (reducers are another story). only had one collector gasket blow.....also, the starter is easier to get off with the headers (just need to turn the steering wheel hard left) than with the stock tri-cat exhaust.

There is no right answer to this question;
- yes, headers will generate more power. Significantly? That depends what you mean. Even the advantages and disadvantages get weighed differently by different people. For some people, 25hp is 25hp and headers are a cheap enough way to get it. For others, they can meet their target of 500hp (or whatever)using manifolds and are happy with that.
- I'm using manifolds because I wanted to be Pure Stock legal and because I prefer a stock look under the hood. One thing I will say is that I'd be very interested in a dyno test between my setup (stock hp manifolds with 2 1/2 TTI Mandrel bent pipes and Dynomax Ultraflows) vs. a generic set of headers with the stock 2 1/4" compression bent pipes and stock mufflers.
