Doing a disc brake conversion and some front suspension stuff since Im in there.

I am having a real hard time getting the backing plate and ball joint nuts cracked loose.
I have had them doused with PB Blaster, put heat to them, and hit them with the impact. Nothing.
Any other suggestions?
Should I just leave the heat on them for like 10 minutes. They are close to the BJ boot though, so Im a little squeemish about using too much heat.
BTW, before you ask, the cotter pins are pulled.
Thanks

have you tried really long breaker bar with a cheater pipe on the end? either the bolts will come loose, or you'll torque the heads off them!

Impacts are a joke, even the good ones can only make around 90-100 ft lbs of torque from what I've seen. I've seen a high dollar snap on, 3/4" drive impact gun just bounce and bounce on a stuck pinion nut, but when we put a 4" long pipe wrench on the yoke and a breaker bar/cheater bar combo on the nut, it came off with ease.

Okay, Ill try the breaker/cheater bar method. I know what you mean about impacts. Even the good ones arent that great and I have a Harbor Freight cheap one, so Im not surprised that its not bustin loose.
Also, I got the drivers side UBJ nut off, when I get the backing plate bolts off, will the spindle come right out or do I need to take off the UBJ?

You should remove the UBJ taper stud BEFORE removing the knuckle - easier that way if you don't wanna destroy anything. The factory tool is like a bolt / long nut "spreader" that presses on the upper stud (nut off) and the lower stud (nut on), then one tap with a hammer (against the top of the knuckle) and it pops right out, you can rig up something with a Home Depot bolt and long hex "threaded rod connector".

Pickle forks are nasty last resort devices.

You must either have a POS gun or its worn out or no air pressure. My 10 year old SnapOn takes off most everything it hits. That and it gets used every day.On ball joint I use it with impact swivel and never had one that wont come off.Thats in rust belt Ohio.Rocky

I agree, a good 1/2" drive should be pumping around 500+ ft. lbs. My little IR 3/8 drive has 350 ft. lbs. But as said above a big cheater pipe can get you to over 1000 ft. lbs.

Suppport the suspension on a jack or jack stand.

When the assembly is dangling or resting on the rubber stopper. All the "HITS" from the impact gun are absorbed instead of shocking the bolt to turn.

Good point, Ill do that.

My impact is pretty much a POS. its a 3/8 rated at 350 ft/lbs. Ive always thought that breaker bars work better, but in this case, there is not much room for a 4' cheater pipe.
Ill get it eventually, just thought I would vent a little.

well If cant get the nuts off you will have to replace them. Here what I use http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00904772000P?keyword=NUT+SPLITTER
Works every time. A net castle nut is only a couple bucks.
