Obviously no one repops 'vert rear quarters. So...

should one just get the skins that are out there?

Or cut down some AMD rear quarters and if so, do you cut them right below the top body line?

Or do you actually use the top portion of the quarter and cut around the 'vert well/moulding area?

I'm concerned the skins are such thin POSs and fit like garbage, but full quarters would be overkill???

I definitely do not want to cut right in the middle of the middle body line, even though the tops of the rear quarters are good. It's not like Challengers where using the top part makes sense with such a hard body line down the middle.

Not sure what to do, but save the part that is left - someone on here is always saying they should repop the rear window gutter

I would go with the fulls, I think they are thicker, and better more crisp lines...

LOT MORE MONEY THOUGH....

Buy the AMD full qtrs, "measure twice, cut once"......do the car right, no skins, fabricate your own convertible qtrs from the AMD's.........or pony up $7-$10K for NOS verts

ON a 'Cuda, the middle body line is right there at the top of the wheel well opening. NO way you can cut the quarter there; won't be any metal left to flange. It's not a Challenger, which is what I did for that; only used the bottom half of the repop skin.

So on the Challenger vert you cut and flanged the old quater and did not butt weld?
At what point on the orginal quater did you do it?
You have a Cuda Vert as well?

Been here myself...The shape of the hardtop quarters at the base of the "c" pillar is the same as 'verts. You can verify with some carefull checking. Here is how I altered a nos hardtop quarter to fit my vert.

I do metal and full restorations on mopar cars only at my shop in Ohio and here is how I would do it and yes AMD is the Metal I use. The top of the 1/4 is going to be cut then crimped like factory, very easy as long as you locate what I call targets point's of measuring reference on 1st the oem panel then 2nd the same on the new one and cut and crimp. Then undrill the panel at the factory spot welds along the crip area and I spot weld them back on at factory weld locations but key to a good job is always make it how it was.
Anyone needing metal work done wanting spot welds feel free to call I have been putting in new metal with all spot welds now that AMD has it in stock and there is no comparison looking at all that black primer with the car spot welded like a new shell. Fast turn around time complete rotisory to parcial resto work welcome need frame rails? bring it . pick up availible

Yes, on the Chally, butt-welded:








As far as 'Cuda 'vert, yeah, picked up a 383-auto, B5/white int/top, PW/AC car:







Needs trunk pan, bit of rocker work, and MAYBE (haven't taken the paint/bondo off yet) rear quarters.

I would remove only the roof portion off a full amd quarter.This way there's less welding .Cut the quarter where this one was welded and you should be fine

Sorry, I can't post the pics because they are too big. If you send me note, I can e-mail them to you. What I did, after allot of carefull measuring and test fitting a hardtop 1/4 to my 'vert, was, remove the existing quarters at the spot welds. I then cut the flanged section that mates to the top well, just beyond the zee bend and around the entire top of the 1/4 to the door opening off the 'vert 1/4. I then transfered the measurements to the new 1/4, in my case an nos hardtop piece, and cut the new 1/4 to match the old. I then but welded the top well flange to the new 1/4. There is also some re-forming and trimming of the area the mates to the "dutchman" panel (between the top and trunk) required. It fits perfectly. I believe that when these 1/4 were formed originally, they probably used multiple dies, and the hardtop and 'vert panels shared at lease a couple of die hits before becoming hardtop or 'vert specific. I could be wrong, but can tell you that from the top well down, except for the "dtuchman' joint, they are the same.

Rob,......not that big of a "project",.........while I was involved in my last project with Gary and Pam Benkie, the 71 convertible GTX,....a friend "loaned" us his convertible cuda and challenger for study,.....amongs the interest in how a vert is built,....was how to convert hardtop qtrs to verts, which we had to do to the 71 B body,....also a few friends had E body verts needing qtrs,...seeing that NOS cost $7500- $10K for a pair that's a lot of cabbage!,..........making the cut, and where to measure are your first concerns,....your doing the Cuda, use the AMD hardtop skins only, no Goodmarks!.......I assume your exsisting qtrs are on the car, if not find a "donor" for this procedure,......at your local hardware store, buy the HEAVIEST grade of adhesive shelf paper,....what the wifey uses to line the kitchen shelves,......now lay this from the top fender line contouring it up the the verts well edge, trim it off so that it fully contours all the angles and curves,....if you bought the heavy gauge shelf paper, it will not distort when you remove it, plus the adhesive is very mild,...now transfer the vinyl "template" to the hardtop qtr, these are your exact cut lines,....no guessing, no FUBAR!.....to form the stepped trim area at the top of the well, a airpowered flanging tool will do the job, if you can purchase/borrow one with a 1" flange offset,....or if your extremely good with hammer and dolly, you could "bump" the offset well flange into the cut qrts top edge.....goodluck on your project

Flanging is an amatuer method that was acceptable in 1989,but in 2009 nobody would want that on anything but a 20 footer

Yes, do exactly that. We do it all the time.

If you've got the hang of butt welding with a mig, you can carefully grind down both sides of the weld for a perfect repair.

We always wipe a thin film of fiberglass over the weld after the grind, to be sanded back off. The one and only purpose is to fill and seal any tiny air pockets that you might not see. It will keep any bubbles from appearing in the future.

Hmmm...seems if I use the original tops of the quarters, and keep the flange for the well chrome, I still have some butt-welding to do w/full quarters.

Just seems like for 'verts, full quarters may not totally neccessary as I'm sure AMD skins can't be all that bad. Same gauge of metal and crisp body line down the middle as the full quarters???

...Sorry Rob, I meant full AMD qtrs, not skins, skins are for patch panels, which IMHO are obsolete; seeing full qtrs are avaliable,...when I mentioned earlier to use contact paper, that was to template from the exsisting convertibles upper sheetmetal from the cuda's hipline, basicaly the top "deck" section that defines the vert qtr from the hardtop, the contact paper template allows you to transfer the exact cut/shape required from the verts qtrs to the AMD hardtop qtrs without a lot of cut and error,....I'd leave a little extra where the belt trim goes, as you'll need to form that area, and it will "shrink" the deminson somewht because of the step required on the verts belt edge,....use a air powered flanging tool to create the step, there's many profiles avaliable for flanging panels, even if you need to modify/machine the dies, or you could really "backyard" it by making your own manual dies using a pair of HD vise grips and homemade offset dies from steelstock,....flanging hardtop qtrs is pretty much what I did on the 71 GTX vert project to accept custom made moulding/albeit it was fashioned after E bodie profile but altered for the 71 B Bodie

IMHO using the full qtr, and moding it, you'll have a factory fit/finish rather than a cut/splice mess of additional welding,....and the AMD skins are thicker .045 vs .030 (factory)...and the AMD body lines are very nice
