Installed a trans temp guage in the Satellite today. At the advice of my trans guy, I plumbed the sending unit into the out line, instead of the pan. Went for a quick drive and about freaked out! Temp guage went to 150 as soon as I started the car (cold), and went to over 250 on a 5 minute drive! . Back in the garage, I checked the fluid at the dipstick; it was barely even warm. felt the cooler lines, they were nice and cool. The guage can't be right (??).What gives? It's an auto-meter electric guage. wired from sender to (S) side of guage: (I) side of guage to 12v source at fuse-box. pretty straight forward. What could be wrong here?

Your hookup sounds correct, when you take it off you might stick it in the coolant & see how it acts.

I'll pull the sending unit (arghh), and stick it in a pan of hot water with a thermometer in the water. I'm sure I'll find that the guage / sending unit is about 120* off.
Next qustion: at this point, Is it safe to assume its the sending unit?, or could the guage be the problem?

Autometer hookup uses three wires, ignition (12v) Sender & Grd... you only list 12v & sender... When viewed from the back of the gauge 12v goes to the left upper post, sender goes to right upper post & ground goes to the center lower post...

Are you absolutely sure the sender is grounded?
Some of these gauges are a "bridge" circuit and that means there's a terminal on the CASE of the gauge which must be grounded.

You're smart; and I'm stupid! Looking at the diagram, there is a ground, and I did not hook it up. Could this cause it to miss-read, however??

Thanks Randy!! added the ground, problem solved. reads right where it should. Crazy thing is, I read this diagram, and never saw the ground. Sometimes I guess you see what you want to see (??)
Thanks again, guys!

Don't worry, we all do it, sooner or later. Strange that there's no word for it (that I know of).
