It's all apart. Right around 200 passes since the rod bearing failure. New crank, rods, pistons, jessel belt, valves, locks, springs, valve job, new lifter bushings, rings, bearings, crank scraper, and oil pump guts. In my notes on the build at the end of 2021; " #5 intake has a pit in the lobe. " Apparently the heat treat on the surface has degraded further. The current cam has 1718 int and 1862 exh lobe on 112 lca, 4/7 swap. The cam in hand has 1719 int and 1864 exh on 111, std firing order. So .022' more int lift, 4 degrees more exh duration. Same lobe designs. The lifter wheel apears to be undamaged. I'll check but it had tons of piston to valve and some room left on coil bind as well. Doug

So engine is out and totally apart? Or just enough to do the cam swap? It's in the car. Pan is still off. The other issue is the screen windage tray is cracked, again. It has a very nice crank scraper. I'd like to leave the screen out. But make a baffel to shield the oil pick-up from the "line of sight" to the crank. Something like this. Doug

Doug Dang, wonder what’s causing the screen to break. I have same crank scraper from Ishihara Johnson. Very nice piece.

DW you are giving me flashbacks with all these problems. The cam, yup been there. The gaskets, yup been there, the windage screen, yup been there. Not with big blocks, because I will never used a screen in one, but my small blocks with race pans and screens back in the day, I had screens crack. That setup you have with the carboard covering the pickup will be fine I think.

Another good catch.
I've seen similar failure on wheel bearings and U joints before but not a camshaft.
Is the general feeling that the pitted area sort of "spread" over time, for lack of a better word?

Good catch Doug.
I tried to buy one of those crank scrapers. Gave them my info, card number... "It will be a few weeks." Never heard from the guy again...

Doug...I had the same issue in 2021 w/ an Isky hydraulic roller. Was in a good friend's boat with a 440" sb chevy. The cam had been run roughly 5 summers, but not a ton of run time. I'd built it originally in 2016. It had 3 lobes that looked like yours when I took it apart. They also said bad heat treat.

Got the springs all swapped. 8 springs checked about .025" less coil bind than the others. They all went on the intakes. Checked all the lifter wheel play with a slick homemade tool from Hardcore. Everything cleaned. Cam is in at 108 C/L, .050"-.060" to coil bind. Rocker ratio is little over 1.72. Lift came out to .837/.810 w/o lash on checking springs. Piston to valve .075 int, .110. Borrowed a very nice LSM on the motor spring tester. Found the #8 exhaust spring about 35 lbs low. I have spares so that'll get swapped. Today I'll get the windage screen fabbed up, install the pan and steering linkage, radiator, alternator, add oil, trans fluid, and coolant. Still waiting on the lifter. It can be installed thru the distributor hole. So if It takes to much longer the valley inspection cover, intake, and carbs will all get installed. Wesnesdays weather looks good. Going to try and test before next weekends first race. Doug

Recieved the lifter from UPS at 4:30 yesterday. Made test passes at Milan today. No hero numbers but it was deadly consistent. It was pretty windy. Track prep was great. Had the front shocks full tight to keep from 60 ft with the rear wheels. What a whirlwind 10 days. Doug
