trying to trouble shoot some racket i got goin on in the engine. Noise is VERY audible (louder than my exhaust) at startup/idle, and disappears by 1500rpm. sounds like a CLACKETY CLACK. Usually goes away once the motor warms up, but is ALWAYS there when its cold.
Motor burns no oil and runs hard. Just this annoying noise.
I originally thought it was lifters that bled down on me, but man, this seems like waaay louder than lifters???
IDEAS????

it is the lifters. I'd run some thicker oil or put in a hi vol pump or just tolerate it & wait until it stops before you put it in drive. EDIT or put in some new lifters & re break them in.

I had what I thought was a lifter noise start developing in one of my cars. It was a light clicking that disappeared once the engine warmed up. It happened 3 mornings in a row. Then one morning I put in some fresh oil with a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil and to my shock it disappeared.

Well, You say to your shock, but I'd be curious to see how many people have had success using the Mystery Oil. I've actually heard from a few people that it really works, and I used some in the old family grocery getter (mid 80's Subaru s/w, and it worked great to eliminate what I thought was noise indicating a total rebuild!

I have had good luck with Marvel and Sea Foam both. I had a lifter that was sticky for years on a teen, half of a can of Sea Foam and it was gone for the last 2 years of running that engine. In the winter I use Marvel in my diesel pick up. Dump a bit into every tank when I fill up. I don't know that it helps but the diesel repair shop recommended it with this new fuel.

The cam turns at 1/2 speed of the crank. So wouldn't the noise be 1/2 speed of the crank? Or am I missing something?

What engine? Fresh build? Piston clearance?

I built a 273 many years ago using Jahns pistons that called for .0075 piston-wall clearance. They were quite noisy at startup........
